This pregancy I have had spotting a few times, but it has all been in the second trimester.
At 15 weeks, I had some bright red spotting, I went to the doctor my cervix was closed, there was a little bit of 'progressed matter' (which she said looked like very tiny clotting) on my cervix but the spotting had eased within an hour or two.
At 20 weeks (Friday), I had the same thing happen, bright red spotting, cervix closed, no clotting or cramping, I was sent for an ultrasound and they saw no blood on the uterus or any other known cause for the bleeding, once again the bleeding had stopped within an hour or two.
Again at 20 weeks (Last Night) the same thing happened, bright red spotting, no clotting or cramping, I had a shower and checked my cervix it appeared high and closed,
the bleeding had stopped by the time I got out of the shower. Baby has been very active.
The only link that I have seen (sorry TMI) is that everytime it has happened I have been on a trip to the toilet for a bowel movement, could this is any way be linked? I mean the pressure from both that and baby?
I am seeing my ob today so I will ask him what the cause may be but I was hoping someone else has some wise words? It is horribly scary seeing blood at this stage of pregnancy (or in pregnancy in general really).
DD, I don't know the answer to your question but I did think the same thing when it happened to me. I had bleeding at 9wks and it was after having terrible gas pain all day and it started when I went to the toilet. So I did think they were linked.
daintree - I know how scary this is you poor thing. I have been bleeding (heavily at times) throughout my whole pregnancy. Sometimes it is painful and it is always bright red. It freaks me out every time it happens, but I am almost 28 weeks and everything is fine with bub. I seem to have a heavy bleed every couple of weeks and spot constantly in between, the OB thinks it is coming from the edge of the placenta.
I felt I had to share this because every time I look for information about bleeding later in pregnancy I barely find anyone else who has been through this, so I wanted to give you some reassurance. Definitely ask your OB, but sometimes they can't see the answer on the scans etc which is really frustrating. Have they checked the position of your placenta?
Hang in there, the chances of something going wrong now are very very low and quite a few people have spotting even in second trimester.
Good luck,
Lou.
Sorry - just read your post again and saw that it might be linked to straining - that can definitely happen from what I have read, if that is the case it sounds likely that the two things are connected. Hopefully it's nothing serious at all, but I know it is still scary.
Thanks Lou. I am sorry you have had to experience bleeding/spotting throughout your pregnancy, but I am so glad that everything is going well with your baby.
Bowel movements (not even straining) is a link in my bleeding that I have noticed, I have never personally heard of it being a cause for bleeding in pregnancy but it seems like a very likely cause for me.
I know what you mean about there being minimal information out there for bleeding in the second trimester, I think I know everything there is to know about bleeding in the first .
Hi DaintreeDream, I just read on here the other day that someone had bleeding after a bowel movement. I think they said they were advised to sit forward and not push to try and avoid it?? I'm not positive on that though so don't quote me I'll see if I can find where I read it and I'll post a link.
I had an episode of bleeding at 17 weeks with Sam. Freaked me out completely, but saw my OB and all was well. I was later told that the blood vessels in the cervix are incredibly sensitive and easily burst, particularly if you have cervical erosion or an otherwise sensitive cervix when not pregnant. What caused it for me was a bout of vomiting - so I really would believe that it could just be a result of bowel motions.
Thankyou for the link Willow, it is good (well not good but you know what I mean) that someone else has experienced the same thing, and its not just me.
Just wanted to let you know that earlier in my pg, I also experienced bright red spotting after bowel movements. I was also terribly constipated at the time, so I prob made things worse I did some research into it, and found that as BW said, some women have a sensitive cervix which can easily tear with such movements.
Thinking of you hun, and letting you know that you are not alone
I too had spotting with my first pregnancy. And a big bleed at 16 weeks, which i thought i was miscarrying, but he held on! I think it was caused from a combination of having a weakened cervix (from having a biopsy due to pre-cancerous cervical cancer cells-which is a common operation) and also my partner and I were only together for 3 months then i fell pregnant so we were still getting hot and heavy in bed, i think the pressure from sex caused the massive bleed, cos it happened not long after we had a hot session!lol
Luckily i can laugh about it now!
Anyway, i've since read alot of other women bleed during pregnancy, i think its from hormones softening our body tissues and the pressures of certain things can rupture the veins or capillaries of the cervix...
Im now 16 weeks into my second pregnancy and i havent had any bleeding at all!
All you can do is try not to stress too much and take it easy! .. Goodluck!
