My mother is a sonographer, radiographer and mommographer, and I asked her for you, and she said its to do with the fundal height/size of the uterus/diameter of the uterus.
Fundal height isn't usually measured til 20 weeks, on the outside, but at your ultrasounds they usually measure it as part of the ultrasound. At your midwife/doctor appointments they will use a measuring tape and measure your fundal height from the outside of your body from about 20 weeks onwards.
