    Water intake

I'm 20 weeks pregnant, and my body seriously hates me, if I don't drink enough water.

If I don't, it's uncomfortable to urinate, it's cloudy yellow, smelly, and it often burns for a while afterrwards too. I've been to the doctors to have a stick test, no UTI.

So I've started doing a water diary, and finding I need to drink around 5 liters of water a day to keep it at bay.

Another bb member has told me this can be common. But I just thought I'd put it out there... Has anyone else had this? I feel like my life is evolving around bottled water and the fear of an uncomfortable toilet break. . I'd love some reassurance and/or thoughts. I never had this with my other pregnancies.

    TIA, Telly x

I was drinking about that through phases of both my pregnancies.

But why are you drinking bottled water? It must be costing you a fortune!

I would probably up your probiotic intake - more garlic, more yoghurt, the burning etc would make me extra cautious. I found I developed thrush a lot quicker and easier during pregnancy than when not.

Thanks for the reply lime slice

I'm not buying water, I just have mt Franklin/pump bottles refilled in the fridge, as it's easier to monitor how many mls I'm drinking in each sitting.

Were you drinking that same amount as you had similar side effects if you didn't?

Yep, I already had my first case of thrush in the first trimester. Not fun!

Oh right!! LOL That makes sense!

WRT to the urine, yep. Most things about the way your body function will change during pregnancy, and I very soon knew if I had not had enough water!!
Like I said though, the burning is an indication of other things than dehydration at play, so keep your eye on it.

Look at what are eating too, avoid sugary foods and also white carbs like flour and rice as that can make it all worse too.

TT, be careful, there is such a thing as drinking too much water.

I had cystitis-like symptoms throughout both pregnancies (I think the increased progestins irritate the urinary tract). I managed it using cranberry capsules. Blueberry juice has a similar effect to cranberry, so you could even try having a couple of small glasses of blueberry/cranberry juice & see if that helps. But if symptoms continue, definitely see the dr again.

ETA Meant to add that this can be a sign of thrush/flora imbalance in the region, so definitely cut down on sugar & increase your intake of prebiotic and probiotic foods.

I've heard this, how much water is too much??

Since posting this thread I started to feel pretty bad in that department. I've called my ob, and have done a midstream urine test. I assume the results will be back tomorrow.. At least I hope.

I often drink cranberry juice, but might look into some capsules - I assume they're better again?

Marydean, you had the symptoms - did it ever get diagnosed as a uti with antibiotics? This is th first urine test I've had sent to the lab, normally it's just a stick test.

You're going to laugh.... but I'm putting it out there anyway.

I've heard fresh garlic, peeled and uncut, used as a suppository for the v-jay-jay can work wonders for thrush or other infections/imbalances in that department. I am dead serious. I'm sharing this with you because I think you've come to accept and be ok with my oddness.

Gives a whole new meaning to garlic breath........ lol.

I haven't tried it yet, but will let you know if I'm in a position to do so LOL. I also find on thirsty days if I eat ice cubes it helps me not to go too crazy drinking and peeing and drinking more. I also craved icecubes like mad until I started on iron pills. My MW said this was a symptom of low iron, very weird. I still eat them though because I like the way they crunch. And I like the way the air in my freezer smells.

Yes. I smell things. Strange things

    Good luck!

Forshelby - that's not the first time I've heard that! Lol! I just can't bring myself to do it... Haha. I did a big google search when I had thrush in the 1st trimester, and found both good and bad reports on the old' garlic trick. :/
I never knew the ice could indicate a need for iron.. Interesting! I've had on/off cravings or ice!

Remember thy water is only part if the hydration equation. For you to stay hydrated your body also needs salts. I found in pg that hydrolite helped to rebalance my salts so my body would hold onto the fluid it needed and flush out the toxins more effectively.
Drinking that amount of water could have put your salt levels out of whack which means you pee more and want to drink more.

Yeah the ice thing was a new discovery for me too. I would get up first thing in the morning and run to the freezer to get some ice lol. Now I'll make it till afternoon before I want some. I'm still eating about 3 trays a day.... I was eating 7 or 8 at one stage! Delicious. And healthy.

I thought you might get a chuckle out of the garlic thing. Like I said, I'll let you know if I ever do it haha....

Your dentist won't be happy. Crunching ice = toothbreaker.

I did have diagnosed UTI (very low level) and also thrush at the beginning of my first pg. The thrush of course got a lot worse as soon as I took antibiotics. I just decided to run with the cranberry in a state of desperation when the 2nd one started coming on very shortly afterwards, the pharmacist couldn't give me a strong contraindication at the time so I decided it was the lesser of two evils. I used it as a preventative, and if the symptoms had worsened I would've gone straight to the Dr - UTIs can get bad in pregnancy (because your immune system is suppressed) and turn into kidney infections so that's not something you want to ignore.

It's always worth discussing with your OB or GP, or even pharmacist, before you start to self-medicate.
