To dye or not to dye

    Hi Everyone,

I'm thinking of dying my hair and i'm on my 35 weeks. Has anyone dyed their hair on their last trimester? I've been thinking about it for so long and didnt do it on my whole pregnancy but now I couldnt take my gray hairs anymore.

    Hope everyone is keeping well.

    Cheers
    Yvette

Yvette, I'm planning to dye as my pg wears on (I don't normally) just as a defence to keep the frumpies away! I will go to a hairdresser who can adjust the chemicals (apparently your hair can be more porous when you're pg) and do a nice job! Enjoy!

Yep, I dyed my hair all through my pregnancy. I actually dyed it quite frequently - because due to pg hormonal changes my hair would not hold onto the dye! It would wash out in plain water and leave a dull yucky colour (and I was using permanents too).
So just be wary that it may not turn out the way you want!

Yvette, I dyed mine every eight weeks once out of first trimester. I think the risk is pretty minimal really.

Interesting Ambah mentioned that about the colour being influenced by pg hormones. I had heard that too. I've been colouring mine the same colour for years now and didn't have those problems luckily.

I've also heard that foils are better cause the colour doesn't touch your scalp. I think outside of 1st trimester dying is fine. Just chat to your hairdresser.

I got my hair coloured when I got in to the second trimester. My hair dresser said it was fine to do so. I wanted to get a full head of blonde foils but she told me that it would be better just to tint the roots and give a few foils. She said that having too many foils may ruin my hair due to being pg. It might only be a blonde thing, not sure?! But I have to say, I LOVED my hair when it was all finished, best hair colour I have had!

I just mentioned to DP we need to budget for my hair colour to be re-done before bubs arrives ... can't have all those photos with grey roots!

Yvette, I believe that it's safe these days to dye your hair because a chemical that was once considered harmful is no longer present in hair dyes - either salon or home-bought. I can't remember what chemical, perhaps ammonia? I'm not 100% sure. I always just dyed my hair after the first trimester & I'm going to have it done again on Tuesday as my bub is due quite soon.

I have been told that with the blondes, the peroxide used can be quite damaging to the hair shaft & as being pregnant can take the vitality out of hair (or sometimes replace it), it's best not to go the whole hog with blonde. But mind you, I have a LOT of blonde foils & my hair is holding it fine!

I need to colour my hair once a month. So I have coloured my hair 3 times and each time I have asked the pharmacist if dying hair is okay whilst pregnant and each time I have been told its 100% fine. MY hair feels fantastic after a colour but lately towards the end its feeling very brittle
So I am quitting the hair-drying and straightening irons cold turkey but its very hard

Reneenay _ LOL, I have to reply to your post, I was an everyday-hair-straightening-kind-of-girl, my straightener was my bestie for a good 18 months but had to part with the relationship once Jessica was born, I just didn't have the time anymore, so maybe it's good you giving it up now! LOL.

haha Jayne, im glad there is someone else out there like me! You know those questions you get asked like 'what possession would you take with you if you were stranded in a dessert island', mine would be my GHD hair straightener which is very very worrying LOL! My straightener and I have been together a good 4 years!

But I cant do it, I can kick the habit! And like you said, once the baby arrives im sure blow-drying & straightening my hair will be the last thing I have time for!

Renee - I actually got DH to bring the straightener to the hossy, along with my hairdryer. People commented to me on how beautiful my hair was so soon after the baby & I was just lapping up the compliments until I realised that your hair can sometimes turn to crap, they laughed when I said I was blowdrying & straightening everyday. LOL. Once I got home though, I realised what they meant about crappy hair! I never had time than to do anything more but put a ponytail in! I'm glad there are two of us! LOL.

LOL...I love my GHD as well!!! My problem is my hair is now too long for me to comfortably straighten it without my arms about to fall off...it's also extremely thick so it now takes over an hour - needless to say it hasn't been done for a while.

Onto the colour - I've coloured my hair about 4 times since I found out I was pg - I get too many greys and once they really start to tick me off I just HAVE to do it otherwise I feel old I'm with Jayne and will be doing mine again very soon cos bubs isn't too far off. I'm also with Kazbah and can not allow pics with my new little bubs if I have grey hairs sticking out everywhere!!!

I have been getting my hair foiled although not as often as I would normally. I got the last lot done when I was about 34-35wk. I think hair colouring is pretty much an acceptable risk these days.
