    Exhausted yet can't sleep

I love being pregnant and am looking so forward to everything but I feel like a whinge right now! I am SOOOOOO tired! For about 7 nights now I have either had major trouble actaully falling asleep or if I do fall asleep, I wake up and stay awake for 1-2 hrs during the night. I know everyone says this prepares you for feeds but I;m actually exhausted now. I don't sleep in and have naps so UI really don't have much sleep.

Any ideas? anything I can take safely? I am going to the docs tomorrow just for a checkup cause I;m a bit achy too. Thanks!

I too ma exhausted, but I'm a bit further on and mine is pretty much pain-related.
I don't know what to tell you, at around 34 weeks I just accepted it as the whole feeding thing like you said.
See what your doc recommends I guess.

Maybe you're just anxious or excited, and your brain is working over time. DH and I call it your 'drunken monkey'. You know, when it feels like there's a drunk monkey running around in your head and you can't get it to sit still or stop talking?

I hope that you get some relief soon.

    Hi Jordie

there is nothing that you can take over the counter that is safe for third trimester (even antihistamines). There are the prescription drugs like valium etc, but your Dr will not really want you to take them unless absolutely necessary.

I have insomnia too, and developed anxiety as a result. In the end you will sleep eventually, so my best advice is to not fight it (eventhough you want it so much) and sleep when you can. It is just realising that you won't get a full night's sleep and making do with what you can get. If you can't sleep then get up and do something and try again at little later on.

    All the best

Oooo, I absolutely hated this part of the pregnancy, everything was fine until i couldn't sleep. Unfortunately it is just one of those things (it also doesn't prepare you for feeds at night at all, the feeds are easier). I ended up sleeping with my ipod on quietly as i found a lot of it was that i just had too much running through my mind, so i would listen to my fave tunes and i would eventually fall asleep. I don't think there is really anything that you can take. Really try to sleep in but more importantly try to take a nap in the day. I always found it so much easier to sleep during the day, not sure why maybe it was because i didn't want to. Take as many naps as you can, once baby comes you won't have the luxury of doing it when you want to (i haven't had a daytime nap since DD was 1 week old, she didn't like to sleep in the daytime). Hope you get some rest soon, it is a horrible horrible thing not being able to sleep.

i'm going through exactly the same thing atm.it's exhausting isn't it? and i just can't seem to get comfy in bed. luckily i've finished work now so that seems to ease up my anxiety a bit. i've also been falling asleep on the couch everyday about 4-4.30pm for a little nanna nap. are you working jordie?

Yep...I've been through the same thing...probably around 34 weeks too...just couldn't get to sleep...it's got better but I'm still struggling a bit...I was just saying to my DH that "sleep isn't the lovely companion it used to be"...

I've found that having a shower before I go to bed has helped. I don't normally like to have a shower before bed...but it has definitely helped...

I've also not a nap person...but have been trying to have a 10 minute nap when I can...that helps to get through the day.

    Hope it improves for you...

I've had trouble getting a good night's sleep for a while now (that's why I'm back on this forum at 3.30am!); my usual pattern has been waking around 3am and unable to sleep for about an hour and a half. I'm really really tired in the day and struggling to keep up with my two vibrant children! I am also having anxiety and emotionally sensitive / hormonal lately, and its started to bother me a bit more so I phoned my ob about it yesterday and am linking with a psychiatrist for a consult in the hope of preventing any potential PND later.

OMG!!!! I so know what you are talking about. I am waking every 1-2 hours and struggling to get back to sleep every time!! I thought I might try going to be later and maybe I will sleep more solidly for longerblocks....hopefully 3-4 hours!! Might try it tonight and let you all know how I go.....

This is driving me crazy! I have no trouble getting to sleep, not uncomfortable or anything, just waking up around 2 or 3am and that is it. No more sleep for me. DH snores louder than a chainsaw, have tried earplugs but they don't block it out. At 4am it seems like a good idea to kindly smother him.

I am struggling to get through the day. Everything is upsetting me and I can barely go a day without tears. Thankfully I finished work last week so I can have naps during the day but baby seems to think if I lay down it is a perfect time to start doing cartwheels/backflips etc and it is very hard to sleep when you are getting kicked constantly.

Ha ha! You poor thing. I can sympathise with the snoring.
I have been sleeping in another room for over a month now, more becasue I was concerned that my tossing and turning would disturb DH. I miss snuggling up to him at night, but at least one of us (him) is getting a decent night's sleep. Better one than none.

Really feel for you guys that are still working and trying to get decent sleep!!!
I wake up every three hours like clockwork now, i dont even need to look at the time anymore, its frustrating but making up for it with nanna naps.
