GBS Positive!!!!

Hi girls,
Just got back from my 38 week appt and the Doctor informed me that my GBS swab test came back positive. With my DD, I was negative. He said that I would be given antibiotics during the birth. I feel a little worried about my bub getting sick. what are your experiences with GBS??

I am trying for a VBAC, unless I go overdue and then I will have a csection. If this happens, will I be given antibiotics in a csection?

Wasn't an issue AT ALL while giving birth to Annabelle

They get you in hospital when labour starts and get the drip in your hand. The more doses of that medicine the better. So say if your water breaks you cant chill at home like others you have to go to hospital so they start this drip.
Dont stress aboutit, this is the beauty of finding out early so you can get that drip

I was GBS positive for Sam's birth. I went into labour the morning after the GBS swab, so there was about 12 hours between the swab and waters breaking. They took a while to get a hold of my results, and I was only given antibiotics about an hour before Sam was born. He was already in SCN because he was premature and had feeding difficulties. They just kept a closer eye on his temperature and mine over the few days after birth and that was it. Neither of us got sick. I think my case is a little unusual, though. I had a canula, and the antibiotics were given through the canula by injection. I wasn't connected to a drip and I found it didn't restrict movement at all.

No idea what would happen with a c-section, though.

I was GBS positive as well, but don't recall them giving me anything while I was in labour. I ended up with an E-C/S, which I think means you don't have to worry about the medicine, as the bacteria are held in the vagina, which obviously doesn't get used in a C/S

I dont think you get the AB's if you have a CS as the GBS is present in the vagina. i could be totally off though.

The bacteria sits in the vagina and the problem is if the baby breaths it in while coming out. So Im guessing the meds wouldn't be used with a c/s

I tested negative with my first two and positive with my third.
I was not given any meds as he came to quickly 55 minutes. I had him vagianally.
They just like to keep baby in hospital for 24 hours to monitor their temp for any signs of infection. As soon as the 24hours was up we left.

You will not need the antibiotics for the GBS if you have a CS. However they will probably still give you 1 dose of antibiotics to help prevent infection from the wound. If you have a vaginal birth then they usually want to give you antibiotics during labour. If you do not have the antibiotics for any reason then they usually want to keep a close eye on your babies temp, this usually means checking it every 4 hours for the first 24 hours or so.

I was GBS positive when I had Emily. I was given antibiotics about a hour before she was born and had no problems. We went home 6 hours after she was born. Keep a eye out for bub getting oral thrush, their tongue/mouth gets a white coat. Emily got it from me having antibiotics and they can pass it on to you while breastfeeding and it hurts really bad, so its important to treat asap, which I didn't. You can get stuff from the chemist to treat it. I hope you have a great birth. Best of luck.

i was positive aswell when i was pregnant with DS, i just got given 3 doses over the time i was in labour(13 hrs) and nothing was wrong with DS

Babe - GBS can be easily eradicated by taking a high dose broad spectrum probiotic ('friendly' bacteria) supplement, such as In-Liven and Fast Tract, by MiEssence. They may sell it in the belly belly store - otherwise you can go to the MiEssence website or ask your nearest health food store if they stock it. Needs to be kept in fridge.
Have a heaped teaspoon with juice or water first thing every morning and last thing every evening.

You reserve the right to request a second strep B test if you have been taking this supplement for over a week. You also have the right to reject antibiotics regardless of the test outcome. Unfortunately antibiotics cannot discriminate between the friendly and unfriendly bacteria, so they effectively kill both. Killing off friendly probiotic bacteria which is essential for immune function, the absorption of nutrients and prevention of conditions such as thrush and UTI's can have quite a negative impact on your health status post birth, as well as severely diminish the number of probiotic bacteria which normally is passed to the baby via breastmilk to strengthen their immunity and assist digestion.
If you do end up taking anti Bs - just make sure you dose up on the probiotics once you have finished the course, and this will replenish your internal probiotic flora and ensure that bubs does not miss out.
Unfortunately you cannot rely on medical staff to inform you of this - although nutrition and natural medicine is not their forte.

I was positive with DD and am waiting for my next swab with #2, they say you can be positive with 1 and never again or not with the first and positive with the 2nd etc.

I was really worried about the GBS with DD as we didn't make it to hospital, i remember telling the guy at 000 i shouldn't be at home i should be in hospital getting AB's, he said it's too late to worry about that now.
DD was breach and i was so worried that as her head was in there longer than normal that she would get sick.
She didn't and was perfectly fine, even after taking a few gulps in there i'm sure, they kept an eye on her and checked her regularly to make sure there were no signs of infection.
I believe they also did some bloods to make sure nothing else was wrong before we left!

When you call your hosp just let them know about the GBS and they can instruct you from there, try not to worry about it unless you really need to!
