    Uterus size at 31 weeks

Ladies, I just need some advice or opinions from anyone out there, I am currently 31 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child and I went to my ob today for my check up and when he measured my uterus it measured 37cm!!!!!!!! I have always measured further than what I have and I currently look like I am full term pregnant (I am huge as everyone keeps telling me). I asked my ob what this meant and he said that I am having a VERY big baby! But he didn't seem concerned at all?? I am concerned as with my 1st DD I had her at 32 weeks + 5 days because she also was a big baby and I was hoping that I would get to at least 36 weeks with this one. Does anyone know what it means and if this means I will come early again or what?? So confused!

It could mean a big baby but it also could just be that you have a lot of fluid in there. Is your doctor sending you for a scan to check?

Joss - measurement of fundal height is extremely inaccurate.
I understand you have a past history to take into account but it is vital to remember that all women and all pregnancies are different!

Think of early dating scans - they are best done prior to ten weeks because until then most foetuses develop at the same rate - past then they grow differently.

Scans, measurements, etc - they tell us nothing about the babies size. In an ultrasound to try and detect size of bub - they measure the femur (I think) How does measuring a leg bone tell us the weight of a person - a baby no less. Maybe you have a tall baby!

YOUR body will not make a baby that YOU cannot birth. Have faith in yourself!

at my 32 week ckeck i was measuring 35 1/2
The midwives have felt my bubs and they dont seem to think that he is that big. Mind you my fundal measurement is now going down so at 38 weeks i was measuring 39.5.
I was worried i was going to be giving birth to a baby elephant, my midwives seem to think he will be around the 8 to 9 lb mark, same as his brother. I carry alot of fluid so this tends to affect my measurements also.

every body is different though, what does your ob class as a very big baby?

Thanks ladies for your reply, I feel better knowing that it is common, I think I overly stress about size as i came early with my first and I have my heart set on going further along with this pregnancy as it is quite different to my other pregnancy.
My doctor is not concerned and is not sending me for any more scans or anything so we are just going to have to wait and see. Thankyou for your replies

    Hi Joss,

I too am measuring quite big for dates- 38cm at 33 wks. I started a thread about it a few weeks ago, maybe do a search for it if you want to have a look. (I don't know how to do links, sorry I thinkthe thread is called 'BIG baby'). Fundal height measurements can be very unreliable. I measured a few cm's bigger at every appointment, but this time I was measuring between 4-6cms more. My DD was born a very average 3.6kgs. As the others have said it could be nothing, but it could also be an indicator of something else, like GD and other things. I'm sure all will be fine though.

Hi I am currently 29 weeks and I can't remember my measurement but it is higher than average, I have kicks under my boobs and can't imagine where the rest of my growing is going to happen. My last baby was 4.3kgs, biggest by over a kilo and she measured 55cms, I really don't know how she fitted in, I have to say I am a bit worried and I am booked in for a scan at 32 weeks just to see???? Although last time it was out by 500-700grams!!!! Oh by the way we made it to 40 weeks and 10 days, so size made no difference.
