    I've got a tooth abscess!

    Hi Everybody,

Just found out from the dentist that I have a tooth abscess...and I'm almost 31 weeks pregnant.

I read that infections can be dangerous to the baby - and that scares me big time - but the dentist said all will be okay.

He said there will be no x-rays and everything will be pregnancy friendly.

    Am I overreacting?

Has anybody else had this during pregnancy?

    hi
I wouldn't worry too much, the infection should be localised to the abcess. If they give you anibiotics, there are ones that are safe in pregnancy.
I used to be a dental nurse, admittedly many years ago, back when the dinosaurs were still alive, lol, but if an xray was needed in an emergency, then the pregnant lady could wear a lead apron, don't know what they do now.
Take care, hope it gets better soon.

    Hi Tracey!

Thank you so much for your response! I am feeling much calmer and more relaxed now.

The dentist isn't giving me oral antibiotics - he said they're a bit riskier. Instead, he is actually putting antibiotic into the tooth itself to tackle the infection head on.

Also, he said he is not doing any x-rays at all because I'm pregnant.

And he assures me that both baby and myself will be just fine.

I'm guessing what will happen is that they will do this - what sounds like the first stage of root canal treatment - and then once baby is born, I'll complete the root canal treatment.

I think he's just taking care of the infection first and foremost, and that will see me through beyond the birth of my baby.

I'm happy with that. I just want the infection taken care of.

    Cheers,
    Ange
