Finally preg after 7 failed attempts I have not posted here during the whole preg but need to now - I have just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes- i am 34 weeks and have been refd to an endocrynologist in mulgrave as will prob need insulin. Would love to hear from anyone in the same boat as i am a little concerned but at the same time do not know how concerned i should be.
I have been there and my best advice is to try not to stress about it too much. You are already 34 weeks, so there isn't long to go now.
If you can't keep your BSL's under control with diet alone, they will put you on insulin. I found the idea of injecting far worse than actually having to do it. It is hard trying to find low GI things to eat, especially when you are out. There is a GD chatter sticky up the top of the medical conditions during pregnancy page if you want to get food ideas (or have a whinge with people that understand).
As for concerns about your baby, as long as your BSL's are controlled, there shouldn't be any more chance of a 'huge' baby. There is a concern that the placenta function can be compromised and so they may recommend induction at 38 weeks (especially if on insulin), or you may want to have extra monitoring instead - usually a CTG every second day and/or an ultrasound to check bub and placenta function.
