Nicky, I had a couple of shocking colds when I was pg with Charlie (change in climate: I moved from the tropical NT to an Adelaide winter: it knocked me for six!) and the only thing that I found to work was loads of fluids (Ribena was my tipple of choice), as much rest as I could get, and paracetamol.
My OB also reckommended Octravin for congestion.....it can be taken on your Drs advice whilst pg. It is a nasal spray that works brilliantly.
The other throat/cough mixture that is fine to take when pg is Dorotuss: check with your Dr and with the Pharmacist as there are a few different ones, but one of their mixtures is fine in pregnancy.
Boil hot water and pour it into a mug with two huge tablespoons of honey (Manuka / Medihoney are best) and add some fresh squeezed lemon juice. It helps to sooth your throat and clears your head. I do that with my echinacea root infusion and it nips colds and illnesses in the bud. If I have a headache I do echinacea root and skullcap infusion.
You can get the dried herbs, put a handful each into a really large jar, fill up to the top with boiling water and put the lid on. Seep it like that for 4-6 hours, drain it with a sieve then warm up cups at a time on the stovetop (warm, dont re-boil). You can keep the drained infusion in the fridge for 3 days before it begins to lose potency.
It works. Very effectively, and its preferable to taking chemical drugs for me : )
I also take sodium ascorbate powder in apple or pear juice and before I go to bed at night I take a zinc tablet. Sleep lots, drink lots of fluids and stay home. You'll get through it if you take care of yourself! Your baby will be fine!
Morning Nicky *yawn*
I agree with the other girlies, fluid and rest are your friends!
If possible consider also taking garlic horseradish and c combination, the garlic really dries up the congestion. As an alternative ensure that you eat lots of garlicky foods!
I also find congestion is kept to a minimum if and I avoid dairy for a few days.
Good luck (feel better soon)
Belinda.
