    The show

I'm trying very hard not to hit panic stations and I will be calling my Ob later today to double check but here is my little problems.

I'm only 34 weeks pregnant and due to have a c-section in 3 weeks but last night my show started to come out (is that how you say it?). Anyway, I recognise it from my last pregnancy but I only saw two (medium sized?) lots of it early in the evening and none overnight. I'm worried that this baby is going to want to come early. I think his head is engaged but I'm not sure as the feeling is not quite the same as I had last time and I don't know if that's because he's not engaged or because everything down there is already stretched from before, but my belly has dropped in the last couple of days.

So part of me is wanting to run around the house waving my arms and screaming at the top of my voice and the rest of me knows that I have too much to do and have to look after DD so I don't have time to panic. As much as I want to meet my little man this is far too early, I so don't want to end up with another baby in special care.

    Hi Eugenia,

Try not to stress out huni. A show can happen at any time really near the end of your pregnancy. It does not mean that labour is going to start right away, some people have a show the day before they go into labour (generally around 39-40weeks) and others could have a show weeks before labour actually starts.

Try and take it easy, give your OB a call if that's what you feel you need to do. But it's not a "must do now " thing I don't think. As long as your not bleeding or contracting and bub is moving nicely I wouldn't be stressing out hun and goodluck.

I'm not really panicking just yet. It's amazing how calming having a toddler to look after can be! After all if I get upset she will too so I have to be as normal as possible.

What's worrying me is that everything I've read says the show can be as much as two weeks before going into labour but nobody has mentioned it happening any earlier than that. Last time it was 4 or 5 days before I went into labour. The really scary thing is having a premmie baby, it was bad enough last time being separated from DD when she went into special care for a day.

So I'm waiting till the OB is in his office to call and ask questions. I don't want to bother him at home as I've had no contractions and bub is having a bit of a dance-off in there so he's obviously not worried. But I would like some answers.

FIngers crossed that bub hangs in there for you for a bit longer. I lost my show nearly 2 weeks ago now and am still waiting! I've had lots of prelabour back ache but that is it. Seeing as you have a few weeks to go though I would call just to give them a heads up. Good luck. xox

Well, I spoke to the nurse who told me not to panic. She said if I'm going into labour there's nothing anyone can do to stop it so just keep an eye on it and call back if I start getting contractions or my waters break. She also said it's not uncommon for it to come out two or even three weeks before going into labour. So now I'm hoping junior will stay in for as long as possible. In the meantime I've warned my parents, who will be the ones looking after DD, I'm packing my hospital bag and just getting on with life (but keeping my legs firmly closed).

Here's hoping he waits till the 20th!

Ameeta - the show is also known as a mucous plug and it basically is a thick mucous discharge that comes away from your cervix. It can be fairly clear and jelly like or blood stained if the cervix has started to dilate. As em mentioned it can happen anywhere from a few days before labour or 2-3 weeks. Good luck with your pregnancy!

    Hi Ameeta,

Yes, the show is quite unmistakable once you see it (I think) but for a lot of women it won't come out till you're actually in labour so many don't get to see it at all. WARNING TMI! Mine did come out blood stained, firstly with old blood so it looked brown but the second lot with lots of fresh, bright red blood which was quite scary, but both are quite normal.

I'm booked into the Mater private, I haven't heard anything good or bad about the new hospital but the old one was supposed to be quite good. It seems I'll be there sooner than expected.

Just as an update I think the receptionist didn't pass my message on to my OB so I'm going to try and get in touch with him again today. I'm not due to see him for another week but I'd really like him to know what's going on, and hey, there's a chance I won't last another week

Well, my baby is also still in so that's a good thing. I did finally see the OB who said it wasn't all the plug that had come out, only a part of it, and more of it has slowly trickled out in the past week and a half. His head's at +4 so he is feeling a bit impatient, and I've had terrible lower back pain too but we have great hopes that he is willing to wait just another week.
