Some questions about my latest checkup...

Hi everyone

I just wanted to get some feedback about my latest checkup. My current Gp is away, so I saw her locum. In QLD we have a purple booklet which gives us our weekly details.

Firstly, 2 weeks ago I was admitted to hospital with ATrial Fibrilation and stayed overnight to IV drugs to get rid of it. He said nothing of this, even though there was a letter from the hospital in front of him.

I weighed on different scales so my weight now looks like I put on 6kg in 2 weeks!

Then, my fundal height was only showing as 24cm and I am 33 weeks.....bubs was laying in transverse.

I showed protein in my urine, with one plus for Oedema, and for liqour it said deluge?
That combined with my measurements of 24cm at 33weeks...

I am wondering should I be worried or get a second opinion......or just wait until the 11th for my next appointment with my ongoing GP?

Don't hesitate to get a second opinion or another appointment with the loccum to clarify some details, I wouldnt wait to the 11th just incase.

Saying nothing about the letter probably means thats everything is ok but it's best to check as you are entitled to know the results either way.

About the scales, at my OB I weighed only 65kg on his scales last visit but I know that I am actually 70kg! They have always been wrong so I take no notice of his scales.

Try not to worry as hard as it may be but definatley get yourself in to see someone soon.

i would call and tell the locum your concerns, and ask for an explanation - there is no pt worrying yourself over what is potentially nothing! I would think if there was a pron s/he would have said something but sometimes they do gloss over things that are of no concern to them and you need to specifically ask. so i would give a call and just ask the questions.

Thanks. I am not overly worried as it is potentially nothing anyhow. I am one for always discussing and asking for explanations with my normal dr I think it was just that he basically said nothing and ticked the boxes which peeved me off. Not sure if it was a language barrier or the fact my other 2 kids were in there as well...

I know that bubs size isn't small as I had a whole lot of high kicks way above my belly button last night, so I suggest she just likes to move around as it suits her.

As long as this transverse stuff stops soon and she goes head down...I am not worried at all. I am getting heaps of movements and feel fine. As its my 3rd I think I'll be cool till the 11th.

Thanks for your extra opinions in kinda woke me up a little.

I remember reading about your AF. I hope it has settled down now.
I would not worry about your weight, I am sure that you know different scales usually give different results. Also many places no longer bother weighing you as the information gained means very little. Protein in your urine is ok providing that it is only a small amount (one plus). The one plus that you got for oedema is also fine. It usually means that you have some light swelling of your feet/ankles/hands. To me liquor deluge means that you have a lot of fluid, again not a real problem unless you have a very large amount. The 24cm measurement tells me that he couldn’t really be bothered to do a proper job of checking you. If I had got that result I would have remeasured you and asked you lots of questions.
In my opinion you unfortunately got someone who did not know what they were doing or could not be bothered to do a proper job.
Providing that you are feeling well and you are feeling your baby move I think it would be safe to wait until your next appointment. However you could also confront the dr and ask why he was not worried about you measuring 24cm and putting on 6kg in 2 weeks.

In the past, if my Dr has been away, I didin't see his locums as they may do things differently etc and there is no consistency - like when my Dr measures fundal height, he always does it from the same spot, whereas a different Dr might measure from a different place and therefore get a different result kwim? I just like the continuity of care and having the same Dr everytime so you don't have to repeat yourself about the same things.

Thankyou so much Allan for clarifying what I have read. Thank goodness my AF has not returned. The Dr had the tape measure in his hand but couldnt be bothered using it. I do feel really well, and I will be awaiting my doctors return on the 11th.

Lucky for me, she has seen me all 3 pregnancies & has been our family GP for 10 years. Unfortunately once or twice a year they go overseas to see family. My Dr & her husband also own the practice so I definitely will mention how come this measurement was noted and my weight gain.

I can lay down and feel my fundal height too and it varies throughout the day. Which is fine as well.

glad to hear your ok with the information. I agree you should definetly tell your gp of your experience. They might not want to get that locum back again. It is very slack of him.

I didn't like my GP enough to stick around for my pregnancy so I have stuck with the midwives at my local hospital, and they have been great!!
