Well I've just come down with a terrible cold - sore throat, runny nose, achy all over!
I've only got 9 days to go till my EDD and dont want to be this sick during labour.
Is there anything I can take to get rid of it nice and quick ???? At the moment I'm just using strepsils for the sore throat but am a bit afraid to take any cold and flu tablets.
Tina - I had a bad cold a few weeks back and the thing that worked best for me was vicks in hot water, with a towel over my head and inhailing the steam from that every couple of hours. After 3 weeks with a cold, it got rid of it in about 2 days. Amazing stuff. And it lets you get some much needed sleep.
I recently had the same thing....I found it took me longer to recover because of the pregnancy. That or it was a particularly nast strain of virus.
The pharmacist told me that all cold and flu tablets are out - something to do with the active ingredient. But I used lozenges and drunk freshly squeezed hot lemon and orange drinks (mixed with water). They seemed to help.
I came down with a cold about 4 days before my c-section which was 9 weeks ago.
I was really worried because I couldn't breathe and had a slight fever. I did the same as Celsie and I also used a vapouriser in the bedroom at night or whenever I was sleeping. If possible stay in bed and rest. It will get rid of it quicker. I also had a few panadols, which I have been told is ok when pregnant.
Thanks guys. DH is bringing home some vicks for me and I'll try to keep the vitamin C up too. I have no probs with staying in bed and resting - have been doing a lot of that lately anyway
Linda congratulations on the birth of your son - hope everything is going well for you
You poor thing!!! I hope you feel better soon. I find ginger helps, make a good strong ginger tea if you have a sore throat or cough and it will help a lot as done lemon and honey drinks and bed rest!! I love inhalations (vicks in hot water or tea tree or eucalyptus oil in hot water) to clear up a stuffy nose so I think that will help too.. and any excuse for bed rest I say!! SOunds like your DH is taking good care of you, feel better soon and good luck with your birthing!!!
And Garlic - girl I work with swears by it. She roughly chops a fresh clove, mixes it with a spoon of honey & swallows it down. Can't say I've tried it myself, cos I can't cope with the idea of swallowing lumps of garlic, which is just me being a wimp, but she's very healthy. And she's does a lot of stage work/performing, so needs to look after herself, so there's maybe something to it.
Well DH went to get me some vicks and the chemist wouldnt sell it to him saying it wasnt safe during pregnancy. He said that it stimulates labour. DH told him that it was OK cause I only had 1 week to go but the guy said no thats not the right way to bring it on so would only sell him some stupid nasal spray which I cant bring myself to use cause nasal sprays always make me throw up
I might get him to go to another chemist in the morning (where they dont know us) to get it for me!!
Starting to feel a bit phlemy now so really want to nip it in the bud!!
Teepee2
Vicks is safe in pregnancy, that chemist is wrong.
You can get garlic tablets. Garlic is good for fighting infections.
If you only have raw garlic put it in the oven on a medium heat for about 10 - 15 mins. It will take the bitter taste out of it. Or you could dry fry it for a few minutes.
