Remember that you don't have to agree with ideas that your dr presents, and that you have the right to ask for time to consider the options before making a decision. I would be p!ssed off if a dr didn't explain what he was offering. It's your body, your choice.
Having an induction will increase your chances of having a c section. Have you looked at books on Active Birthing techniques? Using gravity and positioning (walking, supported standing, kneeling) can help bub head in the right direction, and help you to birth your bub.
I think you have a catch 22 if you're trying to avoid caesarian because of your back problems and yet being induced to avoid it... But good luck!!!! I haven't heard much success about the stretch and sweep but hopefully it works for you.
I had this done on my due date (on a friday), i found it very uncomfortable as I wasn't told what the Ob was doing he said he was just 'checking' my cervix!! I was in tears! It did start my labour that night, but I spent two days in bed resting like I had read that you should do in the early stages so my son was born on the sunday. I was never told this was a way of inducing the birth. I was given a sheet of paper showing how they rupture your membranes and told I would have to come in on monday for that procedure. I felt utterly violated and lied too after that. It was my mother in law who explained to me what they had done to me, not the Ob or midwife.
i'm having one done by the midwife on monday, will let you know how i go.... i have also read people saying it is more successful if a male does it, as they are rougher!!!
I had a s&s done twice (I think!) and it didn't work either time (DS was 9 days overdue). I was 1cm dialated and ended up being induced. If you want to avoid a c-section after being induced the only think I can think that would help would to be as upright as possible during the induction. I sat straddled on a chair with DS for a good while during labour and I really think that helped. Good luck x
My shared care GP informed me a couple of weeks ago that at 38 wks it's the surgery's protocol to do an internal and s&s to get things moving, that consistently when it is done delivery starts by 40wks. So that gives it 14 days to 'work'. Part of me wants to just leave well alone but I also want to avoid induction at 40+ as they won't let me go over much. And I don't want to go over!
I will be 38 wks next week, so It will probably be done Jan 27. Will come back if I remember and post how things go!
Mariahswind, remember that a dr can't do this without your permission, whether it is the surgery protocol or not, it is your body and your choice. Secondly, the decision of whether you go much over 40 weeks is also not theirs to make. A normal pregnancy can easily go to 42 weeks, and unless there is a medical need (an actual one not one said to scare you into intervention) then it is fine to leave you, bub and your body to work out the optimal time for birth.
