Does anyone else have a child starting Primary School this year?

My DS1 is starting school this year. I feel butterflies in my tummy even just typing that LOL! He is more than ready for school, it's me that's not ready .

It feels strange handing my "baby" over to someone else, I've had him all to myself (except for when he was at kinder) for the past 5 years and we'll never have that again . By the time he's finished school he won't want to hang out with me all day LOL and he won't be my little boy anymore. Gee I sound so depressing! I can't help it! Maybe it's harder because he's my first born? Maybe it gets easier with each child? I'm so scared I'll embarrass myself and cry in front of everyone when I drop him off on his first day!!

DS is soooo excited and I know there will be no tears from him. He is going to the school that his kinder was attached to so he knows it well and already has a heap of friends. He's an outgoing boy and I know he'll have a blast.

Does anyone else have a preppy this year? (Or whatever they are called in your state) I'd love to hear about them and about your own feelings

Hey hon....havent got one starting primary school - had that last year...i just wanted to add that i could have written your post 12 months ago.....coz it was exactly how i was feeling.
Bit excited at this whole school thing...yet a bit sad that i wont have my big baby at home with me anymore.....but she was ready....oh so ready for school, so i guess thats what got me going.
I sobbed the first day when they all marched off after assembly...sobbed.....im not going to put it down to being 25 weeks pregnant, pregnant or not, my emotions were frantic and i honestly felt sick....Will she make friends?, will she enjoy her lunch?, will she ask the teacher where the toilet is?, will she cry?, will other kids be nice to her?, will she love it?......all these queries going through my mind.....her first few days at school, i remember gng into her bedroom and just sitting on her bed and looking around her room.....its a big thing not havin them around....

Its a fun busy time trish...it really is. So much happening in their day, so eager to tell you about it of an afternoon. My little girl cried the 2nd week and 3rd week....i think the first few days are a bit of a novelty, then reality sets in that hey, they;ve gotta do this for a looooong time..it was hard when she was upset, but like pre-school, the teacher always told me she was fine 5 mins after i left.

I dont think it gets easier...ive got DD#2 starting next year, and even now i look at her and just want time to STOP...all going way to fast for my liking.

Its a new chapter, its a new phase of their life, your DS will grow up immensly in this forth coming year.....you watch how much they learn, by mid year he will be reading and writing (to a certain level), that blew my mind away. HOw proud was my daughter when she coudl tell me what street signs say 'mum, that says STOP', mum, that says 'GIVE WAY'...its a fabulous time...lots of adjusting...but you wont look back....

Yes my DSS is starting prep this year .. I didn't realise it would be so hard for me.. I have been around since before he could walk and in a week he will be at school!! I know he will love it though and really thrive. Just in the last 6 months he has learnt so much, so I can only imagine what he will be like at school.. The sad thing is for us is that when he is at school we will only have him from Fridays to Mondays now, cos his school is about half an hour away for us and I will have TAFE so our time will be fairly limited.. So yes I am scared and emotional and I am not even his Mum!!

My DS1 is starting prep too. I can't believe how grown up he looks in his uniform, even though the shorts are down past his knees!! It really is a big step for us mums, but I do think 8 weeks of school holidays has helped me prepare. DS is so, so, so ready to be out of the house by now!!

Best of luck to everyone - I hope all the first days go really well. No tears now!!

mbear - I'm so glad you posted! Your post nearly had me in tears, I know I'll feel the same way as you. The house will be so empty without him and he has such a big personality that it will be so different around here. Thanks for pointing out all the positives though, I know I do have a lot to look forward to and I know I'll get used to it.

blessedatlast - It's so sweet that you feel so strongly about your DSS . I know what you mean about how much they learn so quickly. It will be amazing to watch them grow up and progress this year

MantaRay - I can't promise no tears LOL! The school holidays really do help you prepare don't they? They make you realise just how ready they are for school and how much they need it.

Thanks guys, it feels so nice to talk about it with others who know what I'm going through

Thanks for the hugs SugarDust . I enrolled DS1 mid year last year when all the schools had their open days.

MrsS - How handy having the school so close!

Thanks for pointing out the bright side Aussienic . You won't know yourself when you have all your boys in school next year! You'll have some nice mummy-daughter time

My son is staring this year, so my second child to go to school so I feel a bit more okay and relaxed, especially because he is so excited! With my first I felt exactly the same, but everyday hearing her come home telling me about all these new things she'd learnt, seeing her interact and contribute to things more, hearing her tell me about things I never knew she knew.... it filled me with so much joy to see her becoming this clever little being! Plus all her friends she made, craft she'd bring home... it quickly became okay. Yes it can be sad and upsetting at first, but it's an amazing milestone which will just leave you in awe of the gorgeous, independent and unique little being that is your 'big' baby Its wonderful seeing them start to develop preferences for things they like, choices for sports or music - you really see their own unique side coming out even more, and I love it

Aww, thanks Kelly , I needed to hear that!

I'm sure I'll be fine after the first week or two

I really am excited too, but I can't help but feel a bit sad. It's kind of like the end of an era.

My DD is starting prep this year too. Very exciting! We have met a couple of other little girls that will at prep with her, so that makes me feel a little more relaxed knowing that she will start the year with some great new friends.
She will also be one of the older children in the group: she missed out on the cut off date to go last year by 23 DAYS! So she is deffinitley ready to go this year!
