They only bought out all the changes to Qld Education in 2006. The Student Data Transfer Note is now a nationwide scheme to help it may it easier to transfer from school to school, or interstate.
From what I read, they've done a lot of the changes so they're in line with other states. Funny how everyone bags Qld schools so much, yet they're now doing what other states are doing.
Jodi is also right about each student int he public school system has a student record card that gets trasfered to their new school (if public). It just has their enrollment info and if they have had any counsellor assessments or special reprts ie. speech, behaviour, and a copy of their school reports from previous years. Its mainly so the new school has some data on the child to know where he fits in and what they need to do for him to help him at school.
Antheia- the assessment would happen without you knowing. They dont get the child to do anything written. The school assesses the child mainly by looking through thier record card, even just having a couple of minutes with the child when showing them around the school.
Ok all though I have never had a child in school in NSW I have changed his school a little too much so here goes as to what happens...
when DS was 4 he started Pre-school in the NT we moved in Aug and went to Melb where he was old enough to go to kindy but on seeing him the teacher told me he would not be suited and asked us to hold him back until the next yr... which we did so he was 4 turning 5 in Vic kindy then that yr we moved again went back to the NT where he was put into trans ( prep in vic or Kindy in NSW ) we were there until half way through his yr 1 when we moved to QLD in QLD he was put into YR 1 also as at the time there cut of was DEC it is now 30 june anyway he was in QLD school until start of Yr 3 when we moved to Vic where he was put into yr 2 as he is a April baby and they thought this would be the best for him, so he is now in yr 2 going to be yr 3 next yr in Vic but once again we are moving and he will be put into yr 4 ( we are going to see if we can hold him back as he needs it..)
So if anything I would think that your child would go up a yr not down if you move to QLD... As Qld has only just brought prep into its school it used to be that yr 1 was the 1st yr of school so they actully had one less yr of schooling than the rest of Aust, but now they have brought it in and changed the cut of age.... ( but still tec yr 1 is still the 1st yr as you dont have to send your child to prep...)
I hope some of this helps... so to start prep in QLD your child has to be 5 by the 30th of june or it will be held back until the next yr... In all the school we have had my child has NEVER been assessed to see which class he will go to they ALWAYS decide which class by his birth date....
sorry if all this is a bit confusing ( sp?) but hope you can muddle though it...
