Is there anyway other than a scan to know if a baby is posterior? At this stage of pregnancy, would it cause back pain? I'm trying so hard not to slouch, but long days at work get to me. Then I find my lower back begins to hurt - especially if I lie on my back. Could this mean bubs is posterior at the moment?

one of my babies is posterior and im getting a lot of back pain (though not sure its not because theres 2) sorry im not much help here am i!
DD1 was posterior & i did have back pain with her but i also felt her kicks & punches at the front of my tummy.
You could actually see her feet when she kicked etc...
As a rule, lower back pain just goes along with being heavily pregnant. Both my previous bubs were anterior at all my later checks and I still got lower back pain. I wouldn't worry too much yet cause they still move around lots.
As for being able to tell... I was told this bub was anterior at my check up last week. I am really only feeling movements down my sides and right at the top and bottom of my belly, nothing at the very front. If bub was posterior I assume I would feel kicks and punches more to the front.
I was the same...I use to see her foot stick out and I used to tickle it and she used to pull it back...so cute :D:
I also found there was more of a hollow in the middle of my belly instead of a nice firm back.
Ds was posterior, I had really bad back pain and felt punches in my back as he punched more than kicked.

Was told bub was posterior at last check up, so have been trying to do everything to get him/her back to anterior. Lots of sitting on the fit ball and crawling, lol.

Thanks for your replies everyone :) The kicks/punches I'm feeling mostly around the sides, but every now and then there'll be a tiny feeling along the front - not sure if it's an elbow or just general moving?
RB, that is so cute, tickling your dd's feet :) I think I have a bit more trouble seeing these things cos there's extra padding in front of bubs lol. The bumps we see are quite large, and we seem to feel her butt or head a lot.
I think she must still have quite a bit of room to move though, if we rub a bump she'll move it to the other side lol.

DD was posterior (ob had to turn her while I was in labour), and I had no back pain at all. The ob and the midwives asked me continually when I was in labour if I had back pain, and I never did.
Hon, big :hug: Backpain in pregnancy sucks! I don't think it's really an indication of a posterior baby though. Unfortunately, it's just one of the unwanted side effects of pregnancy for some women - me included :lol:
I did have a bad back before I fell PG so there was a possibility it would cause me grief in pregnancy. I never expected the pain to kick in from 18 weeks though: :o The big issue for me is I'm short, I'm petite and I had a big belly :lol: so there was a lot of pressure on nerves and muscles in my lower back plus my pelvis/hips were moving and expanding, ligaments were stretching, etc - naturally there would be back pain in my situation.
Now, DD was actually posterior, HOWEVER, this only became apparent around 36 weeks (my OB did a scan at each appoitment which were weekly by then) and she was in and out of the posterior position until I went into labour AND right throughout labour. That back pain was excrutiating during labour - SO much worse and completely different to my pregnancy pains!! I would say you are suffering from normal pregnancy back pain and I wouldn't be concerned about your LO being posterior just yet.
Oh, and to help with the pain, see a good physio who specialise in pregnancy related issues. They were a godsend during my pregnancy.
Just remembered that after I went into early stages of labour at 34 weeks with Ds and was on bed rest I would curl up in bed and cry during some of the contractions as they were in my back and hurt a lot. Funny how you forget things like that after they are born!
I did that baby mapping last night, and it seems to me that she's head down, with her back along the left and kicking and punching out to the right. Although that seems to have changed a bit this morning - I'm guessing I'll be a bit like you Taurean, and not really know until right towards the end!
The back pain isn't too bad, nothing like what you've described Taurean & BR. I think it's mostly if I sit in a bad position, then when I straighten out it hurts - if I sit properly the whole time it's pretty good. Also thinking our work chairs might be pretty crappy, walking to the car after sitting for ages doesn't feel great!

I remember those pains all too clearly...OUCH! I got so bad in the third trimester that I had to crawl to the toilet some nights. It was hell. It was like a pinched pain combined with muscular but it also felt like my hips just simply couldn't support my upper body! Kind of hard to explain but that's what it was like. Mine was always worse over night or when rising after sitting for a while, after driving, etc. Once I was up and about, the pain was there but it was like the muscles warmed up and the pain backed off, ITMS. My physio showed me a lot of pictures of muscles and ligaments in pregnant women and explained how they were affected by pregnancy. It was really interesting and made a lot of sense. The pain was awful though but it definitely improved, almost instantly once DD was born! I suffer a bit from back pain still and although it's a mild pain of what I felt during pregnancy, I think my dodgy back is the reason it still comes and goes.:

Wow, you poor bugger! That sounds horrible :hug: Good to know it goes away when the baby's born! That's kind of how it feels though, a bit pinchy and like it needs to be warmed up.
The universe must have heard me though, today at work we had a health and safety guru come around to check everything out. She adjusted my chair and everything on my desk, showed me how to sit to avoid straining my back, and then put a note above my pc to tell people not to move stuff cos it's been adjusted for a pregnant lady's needs lol.
And it seems to have worked, today feels much better. Now I just have to try to avoid slouching into the couch after work - the physio at the hospital recommended sitting on a dining table chair at all times, but that is so unappealing!

Funny you mention the dining chair I am finding ours help with this posterior bub yep it's not as comfy as the couch but does reduce the pain.
Before this thread I wouldn't have been able to tell except the hospital already told us but thanks to the comments on how you feel kicks etc I've gained a better understanding on my babies positions although being 2 of them it's still confusing!

I can only imagine what you'd be feeling in there MrsS! Have they told you how they want the boys to be, and how they 'fit'? Like does one go head down and engage and the other one is head down and ready behind him, or does he change and get into position once the first is born? Would certainly make it hard to feel what they're doing!
Hope the dining chair helps a bit and bubs turns around for you :)
