Keep up the great work!!
:leap: new thread!
ETA: boobs are cool.
yay!!
ah hem. Can I gently remind you to keep posts on topic. Of breastfeeding :) Otherwise the thread will be full in no time and I'll have to change it again.....
Question: cluster feeding. How early does it start? I nursed DS2 4 times in 3 hours and he's only 3 weeks old. I'm talking gulping and searching for boob if DH was holding him. Also, he seems very very unsettled in the evening. The poor poppet is so tired but every time he nods off he gets a bout of tummy/pain, goes red, screams for 30sec or so, arches his back, kicks his legs out. Normal? I can't remember this happening with DS1..
I think it can start as soon as they are born.
That sounds very tiring BR  It can be normal for some bubs at this age hun. If he feeds a lot in a short space of time, do you keep changing breasts or stay with the one? It might help him settle if you stick to one breast per feed for a few days, and even one breast for two or more consecutive feeds if they are close together. If your other side feels full, expressing enough for comfort is a good idea to keep those blocked ducts at bay.
Teirae I had the same problem, it has eased over time but still feel it. Which is good, let's me know when the rush starts, to calm DS and put pressure on other nipple to prevent leaking. And agree with HotI the pressure thing generally works.

Thanks MR. Yep I'm actually sticking to one breast per nursing session. Hoping it's just a phase. I just don't remember ds1 being this bad. But each baby is different I guess :)
blackrose ~ my dd does that often! hence my question a while back about when to swap sides. ive been keeping to one side mainly when that happens. mach nurse said when they gulp it gives themm more wind - they suck mire in and milk just pushes it all down rather thsn giving it a chance to come up. dd is better now at controlling/coping with it and doesnt gulp aa much....i only assume the bigger she gets the easier it will be for her.

Forgot what I was going to say.
Gees this little (big) man can eat. And hold onto his wind. Oh yeah, I was going to ask, and please forgive this stupid question (I blame baby brain), do "big" babies need to be fed more &/or more often? Mack feeds pretty well (so far! :fingerscrossed: ), but already I am feeding both sides, and sometimes twice on one side for a feed. Although I'm not sure how much of it is 'comforting'? He falls asleep on the boob.
And I will admit, I had forgotten how much newborns can make your nipples HURT! Owwwwwie!
Netix my DS was a big eater and weighed 9lbs 6ozs, not sure if that had anything to do with it. When my milk came in the engorgement was gone that evening. He now feeds 4 times a day sometimes 5, and can fully feed within 15mins from both sides. He fed 2hourly for his first few months and I had a massive supply.

Teirae - yep I figure that things will settle down once my supply sorts its self out.
Netix - I would say yes. If you think about it, bigger adults have a higher calorific need to maintain their weight so I would assume babies would too as well as more calories to support them growing lots and lots. And yes, holy nipples batman!! Hope you're enjoying your newborn snuggles!
My smaller baby fed heaps more than my big baby. I have a feeling that 'bigger babies need more' might be a rumour, and it is more individual differences between kids.
Ladies... Consistent Green poo and nappy rash for the first time ever. I've heard this is wins? Or something I'm eating? She's still fussy every other feed though yesterday all her feeds bar one went without a hitch!
That would be wind
My smaller baby also fed more which I believed to be because she has a higher metabolism so she used the calories quite quickly whereas my big baby seems to be able to store food more. My DD1 was 2.9kg, my DD2 was 3.8kg so quite the difference. I think it is just the different ways people convert energy.
Ladylove - any signs of teething? teeth coming through affects dds poos and the only time she gets nappyrash
It's very individual, I think. We are all unique and our ability to get nutrients from our food also varies. That's why there's such a variation in the amount of milk that different babies take - they all take around the same amount each day between 1-6 months, but it can vary from 600-1200mL!
Ladylove, any antibiotics? Illness in the family?
Ok, thanks ladies.
My milk has come in tonight. :o. Spent ages under a hot shower last night, which I have no doubt helped a little (anything better than nothing!), but my bb's so big, I can't do up my bra, lol. And Mack has been working on just one side for aboit an hour, with no signs of bb being empty... :( and I'm ready to go back to sleep. Oh well, there's always later for that. I tried to get him to take the left side to start with, but I think maybe it was overfull for him and he was getting frustrated. If I ever get to put him down I will have to try and express some.
 Netix. That early engorgement is so painful. It should pass in 2 -3 days. Feeding as often as you can will help so your little man is already doing all the right things. If you feel really uncomfortable, a one-off full express from both sides can really help. This helps all the lymphatic fluid that is trapped in there to drain as well so that when you refill it shouldn't be quite as bad. It worked for me and boy was it a relief. Although you should have seen the look on the midwife's face when she saw that I had expressed 440ml in one sitting - and then when I told her that I'd thrown some out as well as I'd run out of bottles :) Also, doing it once is not going to stop your supply settling down.
Morning Netix! Up nursing too I see? Hope you get things sorted out soon!!
Manta Ray; hadn't thought of doing a full on express. I think, and it has just come to me, because I really don't think they have breast pumps here. So far (and everything crossed!) mack has beeb doing a very good job, if not a little slow (only cos tired mummy wants to go back to sleep).
Blackrose; yep. Was up nursing. From about 4am to 7.30ish. And a twenty minute nap in the middle. Then got woken up by the dr who wanted to examine Mack, but not me. Rude sod. I feel a complaint coming on. He is not very nice, being ignored (I am yet to be looked at by any dr since delivery) is not my only issue with him.
I did a big once off express with DD in the early days just in the shower. i didn't have a pump and didn't even think of keeping the milk.
Netix I know that feeling- I looked like Barbie when my milk came in. I also felt really hot and flushed in my chest area. Wet compresses and lots of feeding helped me best.
And boo to the doctor! That's pretty negligent- that you haven't been examined yet.
Hotl could be teething- no sign of teeth though.
MadB no illness symptoms and no antibiotics. She has had a couple of full on hysterical episodes though- super high pitched screaming and hard to console, very clingy. But in between, and for the most part, she is content and bubbly.
She seems to be suffering intense wind at times too... Or something like that.
Little monkey has taken to clamping down at the end of a feed if I offer again and she's done. I've done the push her into my bb a little more move and that seems to make her let go. Now, when she's done, she's off and I'm not offering again! She's such a quick feeder I assume this means she's just giving me the final 'no thanks, Mum'.
We're going to start offering family foods come six months on Wednesday. Where has the time gone? I'm not sure she's going to do much more than play with it, since mostly she seems very interested in textures and fingering things, not so much in 'eating' them.
Jen,
my little guy is doing that too.. thinks its the funniest thing ever to him - not to me! thank gosh he doesnt have teeth yet!! trying to get him out of the habit before the teeth come in! i have been getting him off, saying No and lying him down for a minute. sometimes take two times to get the msg through but most times just the once. I think i just need to remember to pop him off with my finger cuz i tend to just pull him off out cuz it is hurting a bit... naughty me!
DS has been on food for about two weeks now and is loving it. He has been trying something of everything we have given him! i cant beleive he is six months old on thursday! i agree where has the time gone and where is my little baby boy?? although i have to say i am in LOVE with his little personality that is just starting to come through.. He loves attention and definately knows how to work a crowd!
Jennifer they do get to be very efficient, can finish in 5-10mins each side. Id take it that she's telling you she's had enough. DS did that, once I knew fixed it straight up.
6-12 months of food is all about experimenting and not so much on amount in. They should get most of their nutrients through bm. So advice I can give is to just try and relax with it. Don't stress about how much or how little they've eaten. Just let them enjoy it, coz you don't want them to dislike meal times.

This dr really sucks. I wont miss him if he leaves!
Anyway, i did *try* to have a shower and express, but it was cut very short when i could hear Mack still crying, brought back into my room, because the nurse had to tend to someone coming up from surgery (you know you're in a country town when they send not juwt women, but men and kids to the midwifery ward!). I tried getting Mack to finish feeding totally on one side, but it certainly doesnt feel like it jas happened. Now have to try and express the whole other bb, out of the shower. :(
I HATE trying to express by hand, especially out of the shower. It's too hard. Maybe just because I have a splitting headache? No, it really is too hard. And painful. Looks like bad sleep for me again.
Just wanted to pop in and say g'day to everyone (so g'day!)
Sahti is 15 months now, and we're still breastfeeding! Who woulda thunk it.
Anyhoo - hey :)
Netix hand expressing is super hard! And tedious...
Mrs. NB wow that's really great!
Netix - can u have a second shower? Seems strange the hospital doesn't have a pump for new mums? Are u in a small hosi? I hope ur engorgement is relieved soon - I remember feeling like my chest was going to burst open in the first month!
Netix can I ask where you are located?

Hey everyone :) Thought I might pop in here and start chatting with you lovely ladies!
DD is 12 months and 1 week, and I've never really given a second thought to breastfeeding. I just feed my baby! I'm super lucky that I never had any problems until last week, a have never had any negativity, even in public (well except a few minor things from MIL).
But now we've hit the twelve month mark I'm thinking more comments may pop up, things may get harder fitting in my very active DD around work, so it might be nice to have somewhere to come to. And just maybe I'll have some words of wisdom by now!
Looking forward to chatting with you all :) Also, welcome back MNB! And I hope you can get some time to express soon Netix
Hey kaytee, welcome.

Quick congrats to MNB. I'm truly inspired that you tried each time and look at you now - you're an old hand!
Kaytee, welcome and well done on 12 mths. I never had a negative comment in four years of bfing DD1, so I hope your good run continues. Mind you, we didn't bf in public much after 18 mths, because mostly she was a sleepy time feeder.
Netix, can you try cold compresses or a cold cabbage leaf for the engorgement? It will settle down, but not fun in the meantime.
Thanks for the welcome :)
Jen, DD mostly feeds to sleep now too. Which was a godsend last week! Had been waiting at the Dr's an hour when she decided she'd had enough, and bang! In an instant she went from the gorgeous, sweet, quiet bub playing in the corner and smiling at everyone, to the terror no one wants to be near lol. Up on the lap, boob out, she was asleep in a minute :) Crisis averted!
