Toilet training general chatter

With disposable nappies of today being more absorbent and comfortable for toddlers to wear, toilet training is taking a little longer than it used to. This doesn't mean there aren't things you can try to see if your toddler is ready or to help them along. Below is a post made by Pinky McKay during a live Expert Chat which was made about toilet training a toddler, which is great advice I thought I would share with all of you. Remember, just like walking, talking and all other everyday functions, we all started doing it at different ages, but we all end up doing it eventually! However if you are genuinely concerned at the development of your child, you should always see a doctor.

Toilet training is easier in warmer weather and usually when kids are over two - it wont be long!

I simply bought my girls pretty knickers (undies like Dad for the boys) , showed them and said "when you can wee in the toilet like mummy you can wear pants too"

Darling 2 & 1/2 year old wasnt the least bit interested until one day we were visiting a girl I had worked with some years previously (BC) and missy decided she would wear her knickers - insisted in fact! She told me she would definitely wee in the toilet.

When I got to friends house (I had never met her partner) partner was VERY strict on their kids (she had always been really easygoing at work) and the house was spotless.

Darling girl disappeared - I thought - no! She will be creating a piddle puddle somewhere and Ill be in deep poo!

When I found her she was perched on their potty chair and weeing - pants down and all!

I realised she was probably afraid of the big toilet (it hadnt been an issue with the boys) - after that we rarely had an 'accident" she just wore the knickers.

My point is - toilet training is a bit like eating solids etc - when your baby is physically ready it is very easy and no power struggles are required. Let her follow you around, take her napopy off outside and let her "get" the sensation of weeing and connecting that this is happening - this needs to happen before she can anticipate that she is about to wee.

Also with tots in "disposables" toilet readiness can be later as they dont experience the discomfort of being wet - so there isnt that as an incentive.

I also have a tip that worked for me with DD.

I noticed when my sister introduced my nephew to the potty & big toilet at around 2.5 yrs, it had been a foreign thing simply introduced one day & he was petrified of the potty & hated the flushing sound of the toilet..

From this I learnt to buy DD a pretty potty, she was about 6 wks old & I just left the clean potty around with her toys etc & so as she got older she was aware of this thing, once she could sit up by herself, I used to make her toast & sit her on a bunny rug on the potty each morning in front of the TV, the majority of mornings she would do a wee & often a poo too, she was never afraid to sit on this thing, yet my sister months later was still having trouble..
Then when DD could crawl & started walking holding on to stuff she'd get the potty & bring it to me saying poo's, often she'd sit on it6 & do nothing, but she knew what it was meant for, she started walking around 10 months & would carry the potty to me often & she'd be bare bummed with a spilling wee in the potty.
I was actually told off by the Health Centre Sister as she said I was forcing her to be toilet trained which I definately was not, DD loved saying "YAY!" & watching Me pour it into the toilet, we'd wash it out & pop it back near her cot!
DD was always in cloth nappis as well, but a bout a month prior to her 2nd birthday she was totally toilet trained DAY & NIGHT! I encouraged her, but did not force her & did not at the age of 2+ just introduce something & expect her to use it!
I hope this helps someone else in the toilet training Dept!!!

A little trick I used with baby 1 and baby 2 was to routinely put them on the potty (from about 6 months) after a sleep, and generally they would wee.....which would be very exciting for us and baby. We gradually increased the regularity of visits to the potty as they got older.

When they were sitting up strongly, we put the potty on top of the toilet seat (when closed). Eventually moving to a toilet seat when appropriate. We never had any problems with fear of the toilet, and infact, baby 1 was day toilet trained by 19 months, and baby 2 by 17 months! Here's to baby number 3!

It's a great feeling to have your toddler fully trained when other parents are still changing nappies around you.....especially the dirty nappies! yuk!

I so much agree with pinky, my daughter is 2.5 yr i've been strugling to put her on toilet training and i think she's not ready yet, oh well hopefully she is in next summer. thanks for the tips pinky.

DD is 18mths and so far we just sit on the potty before bath time - she runs to the potty as soon as her clothes are off but I think she's still totally in the dark about what she's supposed to do on it! She sits there for a minute, gives a big grin then hops off and into the bath.
We're not pushing her but I'm not quite sure where to go from here so the above is very helpful :)

I agree flea, i am in the same boat. My three year old Odie knows all about the potty and toilet, he isn't scared of it, he is getting to know when he wants too wee but he still has no idea how it connect the toilet with the wee. I hops he does soon, i am so sick of changing nappies

Hi my name is louise i have an extremely determened three year old girl and she is just refusing to use the toilet and stop wearing nappies, its gotten worse since the birth of my second baby who is now almost one! Does anyone have any sugestions?

i reckon bribing/rewarding with chocolate works pretty well for the over 3's!

i know this is going to sound gross... but for a while now, we let ethan watch as we go to the toilet (not that he lets us lock the bathroom door anyway, he's always screaming to be let in to know what we're doing in there).

so he knows that the toilet is for wee'ing and poo'ing and on warm days, we give him heaps of nappy time and heaps of opportunites to go to the toilet. oh, we've got one of those little seats that is placed on top of the big toilet. sometimes we're lucky and sometimes we're not... and after many many wet carpet puddles... ethan is finally understanding when he needs to go. he'll approach either of us and say "shhh shhhh" to imitate the sound of wee coming out.

it's going pretty well.... but i just wanted to ask any parents of boys... when toilet training, when did you start to teach them to stand up and wee? when we're out and about, and he approaches me with the "shh shhh" sound, i take him to the toilet and stand him up on the seat but he's never done it that way before. will he learn with time or is it something daddy has to teach him?

I am another one with a very determined 3yo... From about 18mths old she has told me if she has pooped and would either take the nappy off straight away afterwards or she would take it off just before and then do it on the floor :(

But since having my next baby 8mths ago she is refusing to sit on the toilet or potty. She is great at telling me when she is either doing it or just done it (wee that is she won't tell me with the poop anymore) and I've been trying to get her in just knickers thinking the feeling of it will make her wake up sooner or later but she just tells me "Mummy I'm doing wee's" she won't tell me beforehand...

I have had PND so I haven't been overly consistent like I know I should have, but it has been hard. I think I'll introduce Chloe earlier and try her on the potty now... even though she isn't sitting I might do the 'every time she wakes' thing and see how we go... When she is sitting on her own I'll try it as well...

Thanks for the tips... I'm just hoping my 3yo wakes up soon! I've tried the bribing with stickers, toys, chocolate and so far nothing has worked so I'm hoping that by having gotten her these 'dora' knickers she will not want to wee or poop in dora... She just did a wee and I said that Dora was sad that she made her all wet and Dora would be much happier if H did wee in the potty... but we will wait and see... I'm waiting for the warmer weather to try and see if that helps running rudies :(

Oh Lord it helps to know you're not the only one doesn't it? My 3yo girl is the same... doesn't want a bar of it! We have also tried bribing with chockies, stickers, holding a special toy, wearing special knickers. She'll sit on the loo (sometimes) but nothing happens. SHe tells us she's done a wee in the loo but nothing comes out. We tried putting her in undies once and she just kept weeing in them and then sitting on the couch/carpet/wherever completely undeterred by the wet! We went through 5 pairs of undies and 5 pairs of trousers that day, in the space of about 2 hours, so we just stopped and decided to try again later.

Like Pinky says I'm hoping one day it will just click!

Every time I go to the toilet I take Sarah with me and take her pants n nappy off n put her on the potty while i'm on the toilet. she hasn't done anything in there yet but i think she is starting to understand what it's for. she will walk up to the change table n have a tanty there till i come and change her nappy so she knows when she has done something. practice makes perfect hey?!?!

What a relief to read all these posts as I am sick of being given funny looks when I have to change my 3yo nappy! It's not like we haven't tried but she just isn't catching on and its so hard as I am still bf and so its kinda tricky to jump up mid suck to catch the deposit!! :doh: Even though we are doing potty trips the wee/poo is held until the nappy is back on :rolleyes: so am relieved to read that I'm not a bad mum, its just what some little tykes do...........and I really need to relax! :p

Hello Everyone! I would love to hear from anyone who has any suggestions for toilet training a strong minded and determined 3year old little girl! My daughter Zoe is 3 in Feb and has no interest in toileting. She is utterly terrified of the toilet... wont go near the potty and is determined to stay in nappies...even to the extent of changing her own nappies to avoid me encouraging the use of the toilet! She says to me "I wear nappies, not undies" "I will not go toilet". I have been a childcare teacher for the past 5years and have always worked with the toddler age group (15mths - 2yrs)... most of my children at work were toilet trained by 2 1/2 or well on their way at least. I find it hard not to compare but its hard at times not to. Im beginning to become very frustrated with myself as I cant work together with Zoe on this, she just does not want to have a bar of any toilet talk.... and dont know where to go from this point.. I feel I have tried everything!
Feeling a little hopeless right now... Help :-)

Finally some people who will understand where I am at!
My son was three in January. My DH decided he needed to be toilet trained even though he has never shown the slightest hint of knowing whether he is wet or dirty, despite my tricky substitute of the cheapest nappies you can get so he would feel the discomfort. We have been going through 6-8 pairs of pants each day for a week! We have Bob the Builder, Thomas etc...he doesn't care. When I say he should have gone to the toilet he just says 'yeah'.
He is my fourth boy and all of them trained themselves, they told me they needed to go and that was pretty much it. I think this one was born without feeling in his nether regions. Even when he is dirty he will say "no I haven't done a poo" and try to run away when I want to change him. We too have tried rewards and his brothers tell him they go to the toilet, all big boys do. We have had the odd wee on the toilet but he still is surprised when he goes in his pants. He really has no idea! :wall:

OH THANK GOODNESS i FOUND THIS THREAD!! My daughter will be 3 at the end of April & I'm due to have baby #2 in August. I REALLY wanted her toilet trained before #2 arrives as I've been told not to toilet train through "big events" (moving house, new baby etc)

Practically all of the other kids we know DD's age (mothers group, ante-natal group etc) are all toilet trained & I feel like a bad mum when they see DD's still in nappies.

People always take it upon themselves to be the proffessional & tell me that she should be toilet trained by now.

My MIL is one of these, she has the best intentions honestly but when she's around while I change DD's pooey nappy she says "oh you dirty girl". So I try not to change nappies at their house (a bit hard when they babysit though!). I don't want DD to think pooing is "dirty", it's natural & everyone has to do it, it's just most people do it in the toilet. She can't help it that she's not toilet trained yet so she HAS TO do it in the nappy. I felt so sad for DD when MIL said that but I don't think DD heard her (thank goodness).

I'm trying the toilet training again today. She does her wee then comes to me calling "Mummy, I done a wee wee". It's soooo frustrating!! & I even try the bribes but it just doesn't seem to work.

I'm so glad I'm not alone when it comes to this problem but I do hope I can have her trained soon..... (for her sake as well as mine!)

Thank goodness I thought that my DD was getting way too old to be in nappies at 2 1/2 when all her cousins and friends are toilet trained. She will sit on the toilet (with a trainer seat), flush the toilet but will not do anything on the loo. She will stand up off the toilet to do anything...and will get really upset if I even try to put her back on. Have tried the knickers and she will just take them off. Am now expecting #2 in Nov and would desperately love to have her trained before then. I guess its a matter of patience and time but any hints welcome.

my daughter meredith who is almost 5 has been toilet trained during the day for over 18 months now all is going great with that, she has been dry over night for a little over 3 months now up till the last week when she has wet almost every night, what to do any ideas anyone

also benson who is almost 3 has no interest in toilet training at all he loves wearing jocks but seems to have no idea at all when he needs the toilet i ave tried taking him every half hour or so and he does nothing and yet within 10 mins i can go check on him and he will be wet through are boys normally this hard cause meredith was so easy to train

Steph *seems* like she wants to use the toilet- she is always in there with me (mainly because she won't leave me in peace to go on my own :rolleyes:), and has recently started pulling her pants down or off entirely. Then when I ask her if she wants to do wees or poos she nods 'yes' (although she will nod yes to almost anything, even the silliest question or if she wants to be punished, so :dunno:). And yesterday she assembled her portable high chair (you know the ones that go on top of a normal chair), sat on it and wee'd. I only know that because it leaked out her nappy and all over the seat, and she had taken her pants off. And if she has done a poo, then she pats her nappy and makes the 'stinky' sound and hand signal.

When she was a few months old I would put her on the potty, with varying degrees of success, but then it stopped (I forget why), so she knows what the potty is and isn't afraid of it. Nor is she afraid of the toilet, and I have one of those little seat inserts for her, which she is often picking up while I am in the loo and waiting until I stand up before she tries to put it on the toilet. She then pulls at her pants and nappy wanting to sit on the seat. I don't know if this is just her wanting to emulate me or actually do anything, as she has never wee'd or poo'd sitting on the loo that I can think of.

With the warm weather here, I would love for her to be tt soon, and especially with a new baby due in the new year. :pray: (I know it takes more than just prayer to tt) I would also dearly love to be able to take her swimming and not have to worry about 'floaters' or anything else! Am I wanting this more for me, or Steph? Re-reading my post, it sounds like me! :redface:

Any ideas? I know not to expect anything overnight, but I had her on the potty for months, routinely, and it didn't *seem* to do anything (except that she knows what the potty can be used for, aside from standing in!). Like Tobily's DD, I would put her on the potty before the bath, but she would just give me a grin, or get off because she wanted to be in the bath, and I can't force her to sit there. By the way, she is in disposables, I have a few cloth nappys, but no clips/pins, and don't understand or know how to use them, or if they need covers, or what?????

Hi all... Potty training is just so different for each and every one.... I found a great website called pottytraining.com.au an they have everything you need to help support both you and the littlies to make the whole thing a tad smoother.;)
I have been putting DS on the potty from a very young age and found the transition to toilete seat easy, most kids have a toilet routine and it is knowing what each ones is so that you can get them on the toilet when they are actually ready to do wee's or poo's.
We are still challenged with the pooing side of it as he prefers to do it in the bath, I think it has something to do with the angle of crouching which is actually very natural for the bowel movement, with wee's though he is now 22 months old and most times tells me that he needs to go. So we have been without daytime nappies for about 6 months and night time nappies for about 2 months.:clap:
We used the reward system so by and by he has lots of matchbox cars as everytime he did a wee in the toilet he got a sticker and every 5 stickers a prize until it got to the point that the prizes were coming round too quickly as every wee was in the toilet.

Anyway I found the website, the people that ran it and all the products fantastic and would recommend them to anyone.:dance:

Gah, thank God for this thread!! DD is just off the 18-month mark and I *know* she can be toilet trained now, it's just the logistics of it that have me stumped!
I was sure she was ready to try a couple of months ago, because she was always taking her nappy off and could tell me when she'd done a poo, and she's always in the toilet with DH or I when we go so she knows what the deal is. She had no problems sitting on the potty and wiping herself with toilet paper or baby wipes, but she'd sit there, wipe herself, jump up and run off without doing anything, and then pee on the floor.

We gave up after a week of accidents, figuring it just wasn't her time. But I really want to make a good go of it this time around, especially seeing as DD2 is due at the end of May and I don't want to be changing two sets of nappies!

I gave it another go this morning - when I got her out of bed and changed her wet nappy, I popped a pair of 'knickies' on her and tried putting her on the potty every half hour or so. I was doing the dishes and she came up behind me with her hand on her bits, and I asked if she needed to pee - she nodded and ran for the potty, but then just sat there drinking some water and did nothing.
I figured if I kept a close eye on her I could get her to the potty before she peed all over the floor, but for a good three hours - nothing. Then, I noticed a puddle on the floor and DD was hiding behind the curtains with a huge grin on her face, and a very wet pair of knickers on. I wonder if maybe she prefers to wet herself because it means she gets a quick shower to freshen up? And in DD's world, bathtime is second only to dinnertime on her list of favourite things.
The other day a friend and I were sitting at the table having a coffee and DD dragged her potty to my feet, took her nappy off and sat down on it for a while, but again, nothing happened. I'm absolutely sure she's ready to be toilet trained, as she knows when she's doing pees and poos and hates wearing nappies, and loves sitting on her potty, but I just can't seem to get her to sit long enough to actually do anything!

A while back dd seemed to be training herself and just started 'going' without discussion or fanfare. No wet day nappies for about 3 weeks. Then she just stopped (I think she realised ds was getting his nappy changed, there was a lot of talk about her being a baby...).
Then she started going again, but only at her grandparents - she'd even wear undies with no accidents.
Now, in the last couple of weeks, she's decided to start going again, and we leave her in undies at home. I've still been putting her in nappies when we go out, but so far she has been requesting the toilet and managing to hold on.
I don't know, I am really beginning to think that with girls at least it all comes down to them just wanting to (and maybe seeing all their friends being taken to the toilet)
No idea what to expect with ds though

i have a 24 mth old son and we have decided to start potty training, day one is going strangly as my son thinks/ the potty is a shoe. He hates having a wet nappy on and takes his pants n nappy off so my DH decided it was time.(which a bit of influence i think) i dunno how he will go and im a bit scared

I remember my first few toilet training days I thought I was going absolutely mad - we would be ready to go out having put him on the toilet etc and he would proceed to have an accident 3 or 4 times in a row before we walked out the door. :rolleyes: It took a couple of weeks before we started to get into a routine and I am now so glad I stuck with it (after tears from me of thinking I was failing and getting no where) as he is 2 and has been toilet trained for well over 6 months during the day, the night times I chose to do a couple of months later as it is more about you being trained to make sure you take him at least 2 times after he goes to bed until he can get out and go all by himself.

That's what we've started doing with our 18 month old, only she sits on the big toilet with a toddler insert. I just hold her legs and let her sit their for a while. She hasn't done anything in the toilet yet, but still tends to pee in the bath.

ds (who was 2 in august) was doing well. we had to move and since then (it was only a mth ago) he's not as keen on tt. Today, and this is becoming frustrating coz this is how it goes whether we are out or not, I asked him if he needed to go (he was fluffing a bit and there's no way I want him poo-ing in the library (specially since he was wearing shorts and no undies). Took him to the toilet where he sat for about a min and whinged to get off (which is how it is at home too). 5 mins later in an aisle of the library shelves, there was a puddle. :(

I just heard him grunting at the table, so I've rushed him off to sit on the toilet.

Thing is, if my mum is here, and he doesn't see her all that often, she'll take him to the toilet and he'll wee for her!!!:(

I've heard there's a website, and stuff you can buy from said website that can toilet train your child in a week - what one??

I just wanted to share for anyone that is tiolet training...Remember every child is different and will do it at their own pace.
I myself did the very early potty association,(which I just realised I better get out for DS2) then the little seat on the big toilet, I've been through the changing umpteen times before you get out the door, I gave matchbox cars as the reward system,(got them all now so gotta find something else for DS2) my DS was out of daytime nappies by 18mths and nightime by 2..
My biggest thing was realising that I was being trained as much as him...especially night time, I still take him to the toilet once during the night...Days we still have mishaps every now and then..Oh and he still sits on the toilet most times..When daddy comes to stay he stands sometimes on his feet and othertime sits.

My daughter was very easy to toilet train initially. She basically did it herself at 2 and half which in my opinion is very early. She stopped wearing nappies at all times and stopped all 'accidents' by the age of 3. However, now she is 6 years old and for the entire 2009 year as a 5 year old she wet the bed at least 3 times a week.. We needed to get her pull ups and would take her to the toilet in the middle of the night to combat this. She has since stopped thankfully.

What i'm trying to say it in some cases, toilet training too early can have negative affects.

Needing help, my little boy is 2yr old and will only sit on a potty for a couple mins then thinks its time to get off, how to i get him to realise what he's suppose to do?

It's getting quite frustrating as all he wants to do is play, ive let him sit on the potty for 15 mins and read a book or something to distract him but still nothing :(

Hi M2Z...it could be just too early? My DS2 is 3.5yrs and I am still having problems with poo.
Perhaps leave it for a while and try again in a couple of weeks??
Does he let you know when he has done a poo or wee in his nappy?
Are you using jocks full time or pull up/nappy?

i tried everything with my 3 and half year old.....but he just wasnt ready and in his own time he just decided to start going and he is great now.

every kid is different, i learnt if u try everything and it doesnt work, they arent ready and just let them lead

my ds is 3, when he was about 2 he asked to use toiet a couple of times and then stoped. I have introduced it to him now, we have done rewards, we wear undies all the time during the day now but he won't tell me, I have to tell him to go.
We have filled an entire reward chart and I've even caught him about to poo and got that in the toilet latley. I'm starting to feel like I will be telling him to go for ever and he is never going to tell me.
I know he can do it he has told me on a couple of occasions, and it putting up less of a fight now but how long will I be doing this, I can't leave him alone while I do things around the house or feed dd etc in fear he is going to wee and I haven't got him there in time.

he tells me he like haveing wet or dirty undies.

i tried toilet training my son and at first he would get up and sit on his seat onto of the big toilet and he would wee and then he had to flush and wash his hands,he is only 22 months lol. then he just stopped wanting to know altogether.when he sees me in there he still has to flush and wash his hands but whenever i put in on the toilet he gets really upset and begs to get down. will try again in a few months i think. winter wont help me either i dont think.

Anyone else going through toilet training?

Spock is now 19months, my first thought was she is too young, but she is showing so many ready signs. She is now telling me when she needs a new nappy, if it is wees or poo. She knows the pot and pretends sitting on it and making a 'ssss' sound. Same as the toilet, if I am on it she will watch and got 'SSS' and then point to her vagina and insist I take her nappy off so she can go toliet too. And she sits on it, makes the noise, gets paper to wipe and the flushes and washes her hands. If she is nudie rude and does a wee, she shows me and says 'ewes' and helps me clean it up. Everything except actually do a wee on the pot or toilet. Which I guess is the training part we need to do!
Atm I'm just letting her go nappy free and see what happens. If she does a wee try and put her on the pot. But we only started this morning =p

I am trying to train my DS at the moment but have no clue what I am doing.

He takes his nappy off when he is wet or pooy sometimes but won't tell me. He also refuses to wear his nappies but won't sit on the toilet and lastly he doesn't communicate if he has to go but runs away and hides if it is a poo...

So I just put him in jocks and hope the sensation of being wet is helping him understand he that he is Weinberg and pooing and when that occurs he needs to go to the toilet.

I can't use a potty as my boy is the size of a 4 yr old (over a metre tall) and doesn't fit on the potty but is a bit small for the regular toilet.

Holy crap! She did a wee in the pot tonight! I cannot believe it. She was nappyfree all morning but didn't wee I had to get to the shop before it closed so planned on going as soon as she did one. But we were running out of time! So put nappy on her, then we had lunh and a nap. She was then nappy free this evening, and after her bath I sat her on the pot and she was watching 'daisy' (in the night garden) and did it! I made a huge song ans dance about how awesome she is and all she did was tell me to shh =p im still counting it tho!

Tt - that's pretty much what we have been doing for DS we bought a potty for the bathroom cuz he was always peeing on the floor when we getting ready for baths, so got one and always said do u want to weewee on potty and every so often he did. Prob started this back in sept? So early I know but still! We have since got another potty for the general area of the house and the first day I got it back in nov he did 2 poos in it! I didn't even realise he was doing it till he started dancing around yelling poo!!!! Afterwards lol

We did have a couple of weeks recently were he has slightly gone off and had a few accidents and pooing in his nappy again, but I think he has a lot of changes on going on (just turned 2 and baby coming in a few weeks) so not a big deal and we figured it was really early anywyas so not too fussed.

Def haven't done undies yet as I have twice just to see what happens and he can't comprehend the nappy / undie difference yet!

TT, 19-20 months isn't an uncommon age for girls to start, I've heard they train a lot earlier and a lot easier than boys, not sure if that's true though?

DS2 wil use the potty fairly well throughout the day, he needs reminding to use it and I ask him to go for a wee every half hour or so. Probably every second time he actually does one.

Poo's on the potty is a different story though. He is yet to make it to the potty, I'm not quite sure what to do about this. He knows that poos are supposed to go in the toilet / potty. He knows it's "naughty" to do them in his undies (we don't tell him off for it, more so just re-iterate that poo's go in the potty and not in his undies). I don't know whether he's just lazy with regard to the number two's or he's not making it there in time when he feels the urge.
