(could someone possibly make a poll for me?)
Just read a story in the Sunday paper, that hanging clothes on the line is making a comeback with higher electricity prices....got me thinking, I've always hung on the line, except if it's raining. Am I weird?
So, if someone makes a poll to the Question: Do you hang your clothes on the line (weather permitting)

I use the line in summer but our backyard is too shady in winter/cold weather and it stays wet :( so the dryer is getting a workout! I only use it in offpeak or shoulder power times (we have a smart meter) to keep costs down.
Outside on the line if fine, inside on the clothes horse if not. The only things that go on the dryer are towels and our sheets.
I don't even have a dryer!

Same here. I actually have a camping "hills hoist" that sits under our patio. Best $50 I ever spent!:
Never had a dryer so it is always the line for me! Either inside or out, weather depending.
On the line unless its raining, I like the sanitising effect of sunlight.
If its raining, it gets 12 hrs on the clothes horse and then finished in the dryer.
My stuff pretty much gets 12 hrs, and then if its not done, it gets the dryer. I cant stand the smell otherwise
I have 3 clothes airers at the moment that I use as it's too hard to get outside with all the kids, plus it is the rainy season down here! I drag them out on a good day so they get the sun and finish them off in the dryer.
I either use the line, or in winter near the wood fire over night - if I know it's going to be really cold in the morning and don't feel like frozen fingers before work. I've recently inherited a dryer, up until now (8 years) never had one so only use it very occasionally.
always outside when the weather is warmer.
inside on clotheshorse during cooler months, i have a large bathroom so with the heating on and door closed the dry really quickly
the only things to go in dryer are towels.
Nai i dry my sheets/doona covers over open doors!! very effective
we have a fire so if I keep on top of the washing it all goes on the clothes airer to dry if I have bulk washing I use the dryer too.
always, except since moving into our current house, the line is right down the back and in the pool fence. so i have only hung my sheets on it. I use air dryers in that are always up in my family room and drive me INSANE!! but its only pure laziness so i dont have to walk right down the back and open a gate to get to the clothes line.. and poor poverty that has stopped me buying a new one and putting it in a better spot. I've never owned a dryer, even when i lived in Canberra i would be hanging washing out and it would freeze on the line.
Hang on the line weather permitting, have a little mini clothes line thingy that we put up outside on the patio or in the lounge room depending on how windy it is.
Dyer only if we really really need it. Would rather the washing piled up for a week than use it!
Always on the line. I have an undercover one outside as well. Rain is as rare as hens teeth here, but the sun bleaches everything!! And it's far too hot in summer to be out hanging stuff on the line.
I did used to use my dryer occasionally, but it pooed itself a few months back and we've still been OK.
I mainly use the clothes lines- we have 2- one is under our back verandah (gets partial sun but a good breeze- but also gets we when rains). The other under the house- which i use if i know things aren't going to dry outside that day. I wish i had a hills hoist out in the sun again- but we ran out of room in our back yard when we put the pool in a few years ago.
I only use the dryer for 15mins to soften the mcn's or in need of particular clothing that won't be dried in time (eg work clothes). Even on rain days i can get away with putting stuff under the house and only use the dryer if i need to finish them off.
Got a big clotheshorse, use that all the time. I just drag it outside onto the deck, it gets the sun nearly all day.
If its not dry, it sits in hallway (our hallway is sooo wide. Never seen a hallway as wide as ours!) during the day and in the loungeroom in front of the fire at night.
I can't be bothered standing outside at the line.
Always on the line, but because of the sheer number of socks and jocks that a family of 6 go through, I use the dryer for those. If anything gets wet on the line or it doesn't quite dry, I will put it through the dryer or on the clothes horse.

But I only hang clothes out once.. If they get brought in, but still damp/wet, they go in the dryer.. I refuse to chase washing.
Always on the line, weather permitting. I find that there is something very therapeutic about hanging washing on the line, I really enjoy it!
I do however do a separate load of just socks and undies and I always use the dryer for them :)

We only got a dryer last year and I try to only use it as a last resort. Our washing line is under cover so I often have a clothes horse outside that I can put out into the sun, especially for nappies.

Line in the warmer months, sometimes on the line in the colder months (if it is looking like a good day and I get it on early enough). Our line is partly shaded, which is great in summer, the clothes don't try too quickly, but a pain in winter except for it does help protect from some rain.
Clothes horse in front of the fire for winter. Dryer if I am getting overwhelmed, need something urgently, or if the item goes smelly if not dried quickly. I also use the dryer for work shirts and school dresses over winter, saves on ironing them.
Oh my, I'm a bit ashamed to admit it but I never hang clothes on the line :hide: Everything that can, goes in the dryer otherwise on the clotheshorse.
Surely I'm not the only one?
Don't own a dryer here. Outside when I can, or in front of the log fire overnight.
If very desperate I go down to the laundromat in town.
I do! We are in Melbourne and we don't own a dryer. Don't think we ever will because I don't see the point environmentally and financially, and as much as drying clothes in winter gives me the irits, we have ducted heating and the 2 massive clothes horses sit over the top. Just when I am at the end of rope with it all is when we get a few clear windy days like we have had this weekend and I catch up on towels and sheets and nothing makes me happier than getting stuff in and out in one day!
I hang mostly... usually under the patio roof to minimise fading (I have permanent lines set up)... I use the big clothesline in the yard for sheets and when it's not summer I'll use it if I have lots of washing (sun is way too hot in summer - fading - and also too hot to stand in and not get burnt haha)... jocks and socks usually in the dryer and towels are always dryer. Sometimes in winter if it's raining a lot and the clothes have been out (under the patio roof) for 2 days I'll pop them in the dryer to finish them off.
our washing machine recently broke, so went to town... a town that is the largest inland city in NSW...not a single laundromat exisits!!!:
I rarely use the dryer. We hang clothes outside unless it's raining, and on the clothes horses inside if not. We're lucky in that we have enough room for 3 clothes horses, plus I use the doors to the kids playroom for sheets, doonas, etc. I'll pretty much do anything to avoid using the dryer.
Oh yes, nearly always! I hate drying things on the clothes horse, winter washing drives me nuts :lol:
This is tragic but I get great satisfaction seeing my clothes line full of washing :redface: It's in a great spot so it gets heaps of sun and breeze.
I tend to put all my towels in the dryer though so they stay fluffy.
Since having ds it's dryer or clothes horse. Our backyard is shady in winter and the volume of washing means I can't get everything dry without using the dryer. Ds also loves the sound (he nods off when it's on) so it's been getting a workout.
We have central heating but clothes still take over two days to dry inside. I hate it!! I am getting a gas fireplace installed soon, so that should help with drying inside.
Hanging washing outside in Melbourne is too risky for my liking. Nothing depresses me more than having to rewash clothes caught in the rain!!
I use the clothes line. I only use the drier if I am desperate.
Clothesline in summer, clothes airers in winter, I also have a hanging rack that all of my work clothes get hung on hangers - generally I don't need to iron them either!
Clothes dryer only gets used for sheets in winter if desperate, and I tumble my towels for 10 mins once dry to keep them fluffier so I don't need to use fabric softener.
We don't have a clothes line (the hills got taken out by a tree a couple of years before DH & I met, it still isn't replaced) but I got one of those "mrs peggs handy lines" out of the back of the gardening australia mag - it holds king sheets!!!! Today I was really enjoying watching the sheets & blankie billowing in the breeze, beautiful white! Then we had to change the stove to burn fast & smokeless! But .. we have central heating, and put one clothes horse in the bathroom (it gets up to 27deg in there!) and another in front of the fire (which we only burn on the weekends) and the handy line outside chasing the sun. Back when I had more access to the upstairs, I would put 3 clothes horses outside on the flat roof and hang the washing out there.
When it was rainy I'd only use the dryer, but now we have options it's all good :) I never understood the phrase "good drying day" until I moved to Melbourne!!!
If I am running behind in the washing, I'll throw stuff in the dryer.
I live in NQ so i dont nor do i know of anyone i dont think that owns a dryer haha. A full line dries in about an hour, but you have to remember it or that beautiful red shirt you put on at 7am will be pale pink come 3pm in summer lol
Clothesline. WE have adryer but its broken. It costs to much to run anyway. we have an airer inside for when its wet out, and it sits under a ducted heating vent.
Ive just rearranged the family rrom to get a second airer in under that vent as well.
DH doesnt like the washing being "on display" though and hides it if people come over and keeps putting the airers away, so sometimes things take a while to dry
Clothesline. I love my line. I am about to go hang a second load out right now...
(Bad weather in summer and the washing waits, winter then airers/radiators etc indoors.)

I do use my dryer for socks, jocks, singlets etc because with 8 of us there is plenty of those :lol:
I do occasionally use my dryer for other things because in the winter I can so quaky get behind on the washing.

don't use the line much, due to air pollution and safety issues. mainly use whatever i can rig up inside, to air clothes dry, then finish them off in the drier (only a few minutes).
95% of the time I use the clothes line. We do have a puppy that rips stuff off now so most tops or lighter material garments go on one of 2 clothes horses in front of the heater. It's not the fact he chews but more the puppy teeth holes or accidental ripping as he pulls them off the line. Sheets are a major target for him for how they billow so they always stay indoors or if it's sunny i'll put them out on the front verandah to air. If nappy bits or towels aren't 100% dry I will tumble dry the last dampness out but will air dry 90% at least. In the past I've found if it's that drab weather and stuff doesn't dry fast enough they go a tad smelly and I waste more water rewashing.
