Couch to 5K buddies?
Hi all!
I've decided to attempt couch to 5K. I would post a link, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed....
Anyone want to do it with me? I just completed the first session. I'd love some people who'd like to do it with me to help with accountability and motivation. :D
-
YES! Back later.

Which app have you downloaded?

I did this for a while last year & it was GREAT! I still do some interval running but am trying to lose a bit of weight before a run too far again (I have put on a good 5kg since last year and my right hip gets so sore when I run - too much weight I think.)
Anyhoo, I can highly recommend it. (From a once complete non-runner!)
-
I've thought about this several times, but I am soooooo unfit. I would like to give it a go though.
-
Fabfiona - i haven't downloaded any app. I just got the info off the Internet. I thought about downloading the app but I'm trying to keep track of my steps for each day on another app so didn't think it would be worth it.
Kimmy - I'm not a runner either but I like the thought of being able to do it. I'm hoping motivation will get me through lol
-
I'm going on Wednesday night at 7.45 pm. I'm at work tonight and having dinner with my brother tomorrow night.
Kids are normally asleep by 7.30 pm, we have dinner at 6 pm so plenty of time to digest and Glee is on at 8.30 pm. I reckon I'll mostly go in the evenings on weekdays as we have a pretty consistent routine and 7.45 pm is generally a good time for me.
I think I'll try the 'Get Running' app and go from there. I'll post back on if I like it or not.
I liked to run before I was pregnant the first time. Two kids in reasonably quick sucession have seen my time fly out the window. I now weigh 86 kg which is heavier than when I conceived with DS 2 (3 months).
Kimmi - care to join me on Wednesday? In spirit rather than physically!
Chody - when did you go? How did you go?
Anyone else keen to join in?
-
Anyone who's done this - honestly, if you are so unfit that you get puffed, like just about hyperventilating puffed jogging a couple of hundred metres, is this program really going to do it for me?
I would like to try it, but I don't know that my body can cope with it!
Advice?
-
I've seen been talking about this but I have no idea what it is. Can anyone fill me in please?
-
Might have to check it out! I have 10kg to loose and I used to love running before I had the boys!
-
Liviam - It's called interval training. Basically you listen to a voice in your ear phones (you can download an iPhone app or tracks from the internet) and it tells you when to run and when to walk. At the start its more walking than running. So you might walk for 2 mins then run for 90 seconds. As the weeks progress the amount that you run increases slowly so you are getting used to it. Different versions have music or you can listen to your own.
Ausgirl - I reckon give it a go. I'm in the same boat as you!!! If you find its too much then take it slow. Do the first week for 2 weeks rather than one so you get used to it. Or work up to doing the full program - so the first time say you will do 15 minutes of a 30 minute program etc. As with anything it works if you stick with it. I'm hoping everyone here can keep me honest and help me get there. You in?
-
Yeah, okay, willing to give it a try! I don't have a fancy phone to download any ap to though, so I'll just download the page and print it out! When are you starting?
-
Fabfiona - I did the first session today at the local footy oval. I didn't jog fast, but I made it. In 20 mins I did 5.5 laps of the oval so not lightening speed but use read that the key is just to run - the speed will come later.
Ausgirl - I say give it a go. I've been reading the C25K forums and they say not to worry about speed - just keep going. It doesn't matter if you are basically jogging on the spot - when it's time to jog just jog. I read somewhere about someone jogging so slow up a hill they were overtaken by two old ladies walking along talking about oprah! The forums also state that it's ok to redo a week if you're not ready to move on. Give it a go. I tried to think of it as just a minute of running each time. Once I got to the last 10 mins there was no way I was giving up! (btw, I'm aiming to run 30 mins as opposed to 5k. I don't want to have to run fast lol). I started today. When do you think you'll attempt day 1?
Liviam - look it up - I'm not sure if im allowed to post links. It's basically interval training with the run/walk ratio slowly increasing until you can run 5k or 30 mins!
-
I'll join in, I need some motivation. Have been sick so will probably start in a couple of days time. Thanks for starting this!
-
Yay Hunter Mum!

I am going to attempt this, this afternoon.
-
I am in.... will start this tomorrow. xxx
-
I have done it before and it is a good program. When I started it I was really unfit and it was good at increasing my fitness. I am in the middle of doing something similar now to try and get some speed up. I wouldn't say I am unfit as I am pretty active, but when I try to jog faster I certainly feel that way.

I am in!!!!! Once I am over feeling like absolute death from AF, I was so so unwell over the weekend & yesterday from it. Today I am feeling better, so may get out there this arvo when DP is home on break. But gimme a start day of the 5th (tomorrow) jic lol.
Chody (so weird calling you that again LOL), what did you use to time your intervals?
-
Shan - I'll add you to the list when I'm back on my comp. To time I have a pedometer on my phone (footsteps) that I'm using to keep track of my 10000 steps each day and I used the timer on that.
-
Awesome thanks hun! I just downloaded the c25k lite android app, think I will go better not having to remind myself to look at a timer & having something telling me when to change pace lol
-
Just downloaded the app! Will start tonight or tomorrow.
-
Me too! me too! Just the extra kick in the pants I needed to start. Im really unfit so may stay on each week for 2 weeks
-
Ok, so I just updated the list above to include our new group members.
Shan - I hope the app works for you! I personally like looking at the timer. For me it works cause I know how long I have left to run, rather than just wondering how much longer there is to go and assuming I wont make it and therefore giving up.
Zap and doubletrouble - Welcome! I hope you enjoy your first sessions :)
-
I had to work late BUT I am still going to go - in about 5 mins!
-
Okay, I am back and alive! It wasn't that bad really - but my legs feel a bit like jelly and what are those starry things appearing before my eyes right now hahah! But I did it!!! Yay for me!!!
-
Yay Ausgirl! That's fantastic! It's a great feeling to have completed it hey! I think that once you get going and can stay mentally tough it's not so bad. I'm planning on attempting the second session tomorrow....
Just wanted to add - for someone who thought they couldn't run more than a couple of hundred meters yesterday you should be sooooo proud!!
-
I know! I was actually no so badly out of breath, but my legs were hurting! And (I ran down a sort of out of the way road near me so no one could see me) when I was halfway and time to turn around, I realised it was uphill for the way back!
-
Hi ladies! I would love to join you too. I completed the program a few years ago but have let myself get SO unfit again - I've got the iPhone app and will do my first run tonight. I have treadmill so I'll use that - it's been begging me for some attention for months now!!
Yay!! I can't wait!!
-
Yay ash! Another one on board! I'll add you to the list later.
Good luck for everyone starting today! Let us know how you all go! I plan on doing my second run layer but I have to wait for DH to get home to watch DD. I don't fancy running with a pram lol!
-
Ausgirl - congrats. The first step is the hardest. Ill think of you tonight as my legs turn to jelly too!!
-
so I wanted I have started these things a few times but never really got very far and wanted to do the first run to make sure I was really committed and guess what???? I survived the first session :D :leap: so count me in girls!!
Well done ausgirl especially with the hill on the way back.
I have downloaded a 5kfree app for my ipod touch (it has the first 4 sessions free and have to pay to upgrade but figured this is a good way to test the waters so to speak) I liked that I could play my music and it interupted the music to tell me to walk/run. I did have a run in with a magpie.... how is everyone else feeling about the maggies? thinking I am going to have to resort to an ice-cream helmet!! legs are a little like jelly but I am actually looking forward to the next session lol
I do have another question... I have just finished AF (which is another good reason to start now) and do worry how I will keep running through AF as it is quite painful... anyone else have any ideas? I really do wonder how people exersice run when she visits? lucky for me the painful part is usually only 4 days or so.... do I just take them off?
How is everyone else going?
-
Kelebek - yay for joining! I'm not sure about exercising during AF but I don't see why it would be a problem to have a few days off...
AFM - I just completed day 2 :) I found it hard today as it had been raining today meaning that the oval I ran around was saturated. As a result my shoes and socks were saturated a few mins into it which didn't make for very comfortable running but I was determined. On a good note I completed 6 laps today - an extra half a lap from the other day :)
-
I just got back from Day 1. Wow, am I unfit!!!
About half way through I was feeling pretty shattered and not sure I would be able to make it. However I jogged in each bit and I walked in each bit where appropriate. By the end of each walk I managed to get my breath back enough for the next run.
I'm not sure I love the app I've downloaded (C25K) as the voice just says 'run' and 'walk'. Another one I used ages ago was a bit more motivational in telling you how long left, keep it up etc.
Which ones are others using?
I'm so glad I've started. The first time is such a psychological barrier.
I'll do Day 2 on Friday night.
Good luck everyone!!!
-
I've just updated the list. How has everyone else gone starting today??
FabFiona - Congrats on starting! I'm not using an app. I just have a pedometer (with timer) on my phone that I'm using to keep track of when I need to run/walk. I like this as then I can easily see how much longer I have to run (great when I'm feeling tired - 'only 20 more seconds' lol)
Kelebek - Sorry for not congratulating you on starting before! It's a great feeling hey!
-
Still sick here, but I'm going to start tomorrow. Can't wait forever :) Kelebek I would try just to walk, perhaps not running. Exercise can relieve the pain from periods - hopefully it will for you, if not give it a miss.
-
Well done to all the starters! I hope I am doing this right - I googled it and found a program - so for week one I brisk warm up for 5 mins walk, 1 min jog, 1.5 min rest and repeat for a total of 20 minutes? And only 3 days per week with a day rest in between (I still went for a walk though just no jogging) - does that sound like what everyone else is doing?
I am amazed by the places I am sore today - wouldn't have thought 9 minutes of jogging would exercise so many parts!
-
So long as your 'rest' is walking, yep :)
