Its such an exciting time Kel. So excited for you!!
Jen - A friend of mine does take on clients wishing to birth at home. She is about to have a babe herself so I dont expect she'll be taking on anyone at the moment but I have sent her a message in relation to myself ;)
Cassius - Well there you go! I'm actually born and raised in Townsville. We moved to Brissy in 09 for Uni. Yes I've never done a tropic summer heavily pregnant so I'm a bit nervous. Both girls were winter babies so this will be an interesting one. I suspect I'll be down the strand lazing in a chair a fair bit!!
Kelly: I forgot to add that it is super cool that your DP is taking leave now xx Such a special time...I know that i have said this a bazillion times so apologies if it is starting to grate on your nerves
Sara: yep. The strand is where i would live hahahaha...you could also just float around the rock pool and then waddle up to the cafe above for some yummo food...oh gosh, i wish i were there RIGHT NOW lol.
I do not have the tropics love. Hate humidity, hate sweat and I have transparent skin. I was fashioned for much milder climes! Going back to visit Tsv is a winter activity and I pack my Sydney summer gear.
I get around the cold night time feeds here by cosleeping. All set!
Having said that, I was quite looking forward to pg days in the pool last summer and it was such a cool one that only happened a few times!
At least you don't need to worry about keeping the room warm for birth!
This is what i was thinking about having a November baby! then i remembered that I live in Melbourne
I am starting to put together all the little things for my labour and baby bag...so exciting! Have the face mist spray stuff, the rescue remedy, the birthing oil (a clary sage mix etc) and some of the homeopathics that i picked up while in italy...
havent started on the bigger practical things like gloves, and plasticy mat thingos (didnt use them last time being a waterbirth and all).
So homebirth midwives can now continue to be indemnified until July 2015. Govt also announced variations to collaborative care arrangements (meaning they won't be required from what I can gather for IMs at home births).
The AMA has condemned the decision as undermining care and safety. So it must be a fairly good outcome! AMA president says, "the Commonwealth ... will be essentially allowing private practice by an independent midwife."
Hallelujah! We can only hope it improves from here. So maybe emails to the Health Minister are not in vain. ;) Might send her a thank you one now too.
Off to read in more detail. Relieved on two fronts personally 1) my midwife and her colleagues around the country can still practice and 2) my PHI will likely continue to provide HB cover.
I knew i'd go into labour if he started leave!! That very day!! Posted a birth announcement but I think most of you have seen it :) xx
Huge Congrats Kelly. Good on you for trusting your instincts hun
Jen - Hahahaha yeah true! I plan to have a blow up pool in the back yard permanately filled. A part of me is a tad worried about how I'll handle the tropical summer. Time will tell!!
I see some big changes happening on the Homebirth front. I've seen a link floating around on Facey that they are going to abolish the Collaborative Agreement requiring Midwives to work with Dr's in regards to Home birthing women. I wonder who's making all these changes. I hope its not just a fascade!
Yay! off looking for BA. :leap:
Congrats Kelly!

Congratulations Kelly!!!!!
I need to go check out the BA now!!!! Man, i log off for a few hours and miss the news hahaha!
Hi all :)
I have my first appointment tonight with my IM! Very excited to be seeing her again and for DP to meet her.
I feel like I should have a list of questions for her - but I can't seem to really think of much.
What sorts of things should I be asking her? I'm so new to all of this that I'm really not too sure - plus I have pregnancy brain so that makes it all so much worse!
Your advice would be much appreciated!
Amy :)
Hey Aimz
I still forget the one question I have every time I see my MW!
I can't remember what I asked my midwife. I got more into the personal side of things just to see if we'd meld, IYKWIM. I wanted to know my MW was not just going to support my decisions because that's her job, but actually have the same beliefs etc. Moved into protocols in the later appointments. Sadly she left (I'm on a community midwifery program) but my new MW is also a good fit.
Aimz checkthis out http://janetfraser.id.au/blog/2012/0...rth-attendant/
Aimz: yay for the first appt!! so exciting! questions and discussions will come! you guys will chat and bit by bit it all comes out. she will have some basic questions for you no doubt (pregnancy history, allergies, date of LMP etc etc) and that will help facilitate discussion. she might ask what you would like for the homebirth (ie waterbirth etc). so exciting!!!
That list is excellent!! Have tweaked it and added a few more of my own.
So helpful, thank you!
I found the first appt involved a lot of listening on my part, to see how I felt about what she said.
Some of my qns now seem irrelevant. There is plenty of time to get into the nitty gritty. So just think of what is most important to you. I just checked she agreed with my reasons for HBACing and the things I didn't agree with at the hospital that I was trying to avoid.
Mostly it was about seeing if we gelled and if I felt I could trust her.
Y'know what? I thought I'd want a mother hen type who would appear calm, wise, all knowing and have so much experience that she had all the answers. My m/w was more like a girlfriend and I'm so glad. I learned to lean more on myself and trust my knowledge, with her there as a safety net and a sounding board. (she probably does have all the answers, but I didn't need that in labour anyway!)
The second m/w was at the first appt too so I got to see how they related to each other as well as us.
You are making me want to jump right back in with all these recollections!
Oh Amy I hope your first meeting went well :) very exciting
It was AMAZING. Perfect. She is wonderful. We all clicked. So easy, so comfortable. Just awesome.
Feeling so great about this decision! Now I have books and DVDs to keep me occupied!! All on loan with many more at my disposal.
On cloud nine :) really feel like I'm doing the best thing for me and my baby and setting myself up for all future births.
Blessed :heartbeat:
That's great to hear Aimz :)
Congrats Kelly!!!!!! Welcome Amaya!
Lovely to hear ur MW appointment was good aimz! Lovely news
Glad to hear it went well, Aimz!
Awesome stuff Aimz!!!
Tanya: hope you are doing well babe and getting all in the groove for welcoming this bun earthside!
That is great news, Aimz! Very happy for you :D
Thanks Cassius, I am getting the last things done... So difficult with a 2yo (in two days) walking a step behind me destroying ll in his path! I cleaned my room yrsterday and while I did the he spun through the lounge and kitchen like a tornado! *sigh*
Had a lovely intimate Blessingway over the week end, was nice and helped me focus on my birth, which is something I haven't really done... So I guess I am ready :)
Glad it went well Aimz!!
SO i got accepted into our local hosp home birth program and will be meeting my midwives within the next few weeks. Im still slightly unsure whether I will attempt homebirth or not.
Can I ask a few questions?
How do they prepare the environment for it? My last labour was only 35min so we are hugely worried that no one will even make it in time and want to know if they leave like a sterile kit etc at your home?
I dont have a huge house either.. and the main living area is very open (no curtains LOL) so the brith area maybe our bedroom so do I need water proof stuff etc?
I have put a mattress protector on my bed... But you really don't need anything if you will be expecting someone to turn up with everything. Cord can stay intact, everyone has towels, you have your breasts and I assume you will have baby blankets and nappies... *shrugs*
Things that I have in my pack are;
Mirror
Towels
Scissors
Cord ties
Homeopathic herbs to help with after birth pains and to help combat any excess bleeding.
Herbs for soothing my perineum
List of emergency numbers
Ummmm... Think that's it without going to look.
So we now have a vomiting almost 5 yo in the house *sigh*
Hmmm hubby now not so keen on HB. Lol says he once we have been accepted.
Says its a great back up plan...
Wonder what our midwife will say on sat when we meet her.
But who is giving birth? Does he give a reason why? Men quite often have issues initially and I think it stems from the stigma associated with birth in the media.
I am sure there are threads on here somewhere about the exact thing. My partner was very reluctant, but now wouldn't have it any other way.
Beatrix I second what Tanya said about the list... I really had practically NOTHING for birth. Just towels food & mirror etc (no herbs or anything like that) just made sure I had a cover on the bed which was good for dd but didn't go on the bed at all for ds. I was more concerned about having things ready for baby!
As for dh, how much does he know about hb? Oftentimes its just the unknown that causes caution. I'm nit sure what exactly to recommend for him though as I'm blessed to have a very hb oriented dh, he wouldve had be freebirth ALL our babies!! Lol but he comes from a large family where mil had hbs for the last 4 or 5 children so he knows how 'normal & beautiful' it can be... Either that or he just can't be stuffed taking me to hospital
Beatrix, it's either at home or on the side of the road for you I reckon. I was in a hospital HB program, it will definitely err on the side of extreme caution, so maybe tell DH that. They'll bring an oxygen tank for if you or the baby need it after birth, that will be in your home from 38 or 39 weeks, and drugs to deliver the placenta/stop bleeding etc , in case you need or want them. They stay in your fridge. They may also provide a birth pool. Your midwife will work out a plan of attack for making the birth, probably calling them the minute you have a contraction lol!
I am sure my sil knows EXACTLY how u feel... Her births got progressively quicker but her dh was insistent on going to hosp. She ended up getting to the hospital about 10min before delivering with her 3rd & gave birth in the hospital CAR PARK (on a matress in thier car which was meant to be for her dh to get some sleep if he couldn't find a hotel as they live out of town) anyway I don't know how she did it but I don't know what it'd be like attempting hb without a supportive partner either, I guess unfortunately u seem to be stuck in a really tricky spot. I hope ur dh comes around with some 'education' & talking to mw :D
Thanks for the Replys
We have our first meet and greet on Sat 1pm so will see what the midwife says, but yes even though I will be birthing this baby there is no way I will ever use the its my body line and go against hubbies wishes. I couldn't imagine making him feel uncomfortable with my decision. Its not just my baby its ours. We have plenty of time to make him feel good about a home birth
Pz- side of the road def scares me!!
Mrsbaj- he def doesnt know anything about Birth let alone HB so hoping lots of education from myself and the midwife will reassure him and hope he can learn to trust me and my body.
