As some of you will know, bleeding during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, is quite common, with varying degrees of bleeding. The reasons too can be varied, which are listed in the article on the main site of BellyBelly HERE - well worth the read for all. However for those in our forums, I thought I would start this topic as it's a very common topic of discussion and it does happen to many of us.

I wanted to make a specific place where women can share their experiences of bleeding in pregnancy, with both positive and negative outcomes. I know of so many varying stories, where women have still had a 'period' right through their whole pregnancy, even bleeding and cramping for the whole pregnancy, yet have had healthy babies. There are also those who are unfortunate to have miscarried as a result of bleeding.

If you feel comfortable sharing your story, please do. If you are uncomfortable discussing bleeding in pregnancy, that's totally fine and there is no pressure to contribute whatsoever. Hopefully this thread can bring support to our members who are experiencing bleeding during pregnancy, which of course can be very upsetting not knowing what is happening.

Hello: I don't know if this is the right forum, but here's hoping it is.

I have been trying to get pregnant for about 18 months. I won't bore you with the history, but right now I am on my 7th day of a missed period. In other words, it should have come on April 6th. I have never been this late, and so now as you can imagine I am wondering what all these pings and pangs really mean (not that I haven't felt them before, but not at this level)

I had a P test on Friday as I was weeing all day Friday and felt absolutely trashed. Plus I had a strange burning sensation right at the front. The test was neither positive nor negative: the line was very very faint. The doctor told me she thought - from all my other signs - that I was P but wants me to go and get a blood test on Monday when the levels will be higher and more detectable.

It is Sunday now, and even though I have had spotting on and off last week (not every day and never more that the size of a 5 cent peice, and not possibly a period) today's spotting - dark red - has come with some deeper pains, almost like p pains but a bitmore frontal, and like electricity, jabbing. The blood is also a bit more, but only when wiping, not flowing.And, about the size of a 20cent coin. Still not enough for a period.

I am wondering what this pain is, and if I am getting my period. Could I be Pregs and be having a miscarriage? Are you supposed to feel lots of pain with a m/c or little? Isn't spotting normally around the day of a missed period, not a week after? I am a little concerned. I have to not get my hopes up. (thanks for listening)

Honestly it is hard to say - could be breakthrough bleeding, or implantation bleeding - I had a small bleed at 5.5wks and freaked - dark red. On the flip side, yes it could also be an early m/c - every womens experience is so different it is hard to generalise what it feels like for individuals. Some people have no pain and start to bleed, others have some spotting and then period type pain which gets heavier.

Good luck for tomorrow, I hope it is just some implant or breakthrough bleeding for you too :) Post again and lets us know your bloods.

PS you are soooo much more patient than me, you haven't tested since Friday and I would have POAS every hour :) :doh:

Hi Sam, thanks for the advice,:hug: you are right, we are all so different. I guess we hang onto the words of others and look for the similarities so that we can answer our own questions, but in the end you just have to wait, don't you. re testing, you are kind, but I don't know if it is patience or my fear of the single red line! Although I did go thru a stage of buying Ptests all the time- I was getting obsessive!

As it turns out, I was in pain last night and the blood started to flow more, is a bit more like normal colour and with bits. So I am not going to get a blood test becuase I know this is the period that - for some strange reason - was holding off. That is probably why that test was so unclear. I am not P after all, and will just have to move on ...ahh.. seemed so close!! (it's not as though we don't get used to this tho!). Oh well, look on the bright side, at least I know I am fertile!(I had all the tests I could -except the F-tube one, and my hub was tested too). The blood flow is a relief in a way becuase I feel like I have 'popped' and the pressure is off. :redface: I do wonder if it is an early m/c. always wonder 'bout that. Also, there is no major pain, so I am not worried anymore.

I was pregs at 18 and, for certains reasons, terminated it. Back then the only thing that I notice was large boobs! Little did I know that 20 years down the track I would be going through all this, but it is a good lesson - not to expect everything to always go right. Yes, age will certainly be a factor with me, but I am a young 38 yr old ;)

(this is an additional edit: just wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar situation as above, but has also had the egg-white mucus (normally associated with ovulation) coming out in equal quantities with the blood - it is very strange, have never had this before - incidentally, the blood is still flowing )

Ahh....I just went to the toilet and there was brown spotting.
I'm so scared, I hope this isn't bad.

SaraJane - how frightening for you. Have you had any more spotting since you posted? If still brown, I would see your GP tomorrow to discuss. If it gets worse now or overnight, I know it is a Friday night, but get it checked hun.

everyone is different - fingers crossed you just had some implantation breakthrough or something that took a day to come out :goodluck2:

Thanks Sami. I haven't really had anymore since then. I hope it doesn't come back! It's pretty scary.
I've booked an appointment to see my GP on tuesday coz she doesn't work until then. But if it gets worse before then I'll see someone else!!

SaraJane, I know it's hard not to worry when you have some spotting, but brown spotting is usually old blood and nothing to worry about. Definitely talk to your dr about it, but I just wanted to put your mind at ease, especially over the weekend :hug:.

I'm so worried, I hope nothing is wrong. I am trying to be positive and think that it happened right on 8 wks, might just be breakthrough bleeding coz it would be when AF would be due.

I don't have any cramps or anything. And I still have sore bbs and I hadn't had any morning sickness but it seems to have started over the last couple of days. I'm just praying that these are all good signs.

It sounds like you are right about the breakthrough bleeding SJ, it makes sense with the timing and the fact that you aren't cramping, etc is all good. Can you get into another GP today just for peace of mind? I'm praying for you :hug:

Oh Sara :hug: having sore BBs and nausea started recently is a good good thing! As long as the bleeding isn't red it *should* be ok.... I am :pray: so hard for you that all is OK. Try and stay strong as hard as that would be.... must be very scary for you. You've waited so long for this pregnancy you deserve a healthy strong bub.

Thanks girls. DH had to go to work today :( so I have no car to go anywhere. But if it gets worse I will ring him and he will come home and we'll get it checked out. I am just :pray: that it stops. I'm trying not to worry but its so hard. DH is being positive which helps. Wish he didn't have to go to work but he really had to, don't want to get him in trouble for not going.

Anyway, DH got me some dvd's before he left so I am going to go lie down and watch one now!

I hope everything is going ok for you. I had both brown spotting and bright red bleeding in my first trimester (from 5.5 through to nearly 9 weeks). At times I was convinced I was m/c'ing, and was stressed out of my scone. I did end up being advised to reduce my activity right down (wasn't allowed to go to work for ~ 3 weeks), but got through it fine (apart from going more than a little stir-crazy at times!). So hang in there, look after yourself and take it easy! It doesn't necessarily mean things will go wrong, and maybe it's just nature's way of saying "hey, be lazy for a while". Also, I totally agree that the sore bbs and lack of pain is a good sign. I'm thinking of you and sofa-land and sending a big :hug:

Well yesterday there was less spotting, hardly any, and so far since I've gotten up today there hasn't been any :crossfingers: So hopefully it stays away. I'm seeing my Dr this morning at 10.30 so will see what she says. Hopefully it was just a bit of breakthrough spotting coz it's when AF would have been due. I'm going to ask for a scan to check I think but I'm so scared of them not finding a heartbeat!!!! ahhh....it's going to be a worrying time but hopefully it's all over soon and everything is great!! :pray:

I hope someone out there can perhaps help me out here. We started trying for a baby last month. My period was due on 8 May and I'm usually always on time (give or take a day). About three days before I was due there was a bit of spotting - brown colour - and after seeing this forum I figured it was some old blood. It only lasted that afternoon and then nothing. My period didn't come on the due date so two days later while in NZ on holiday I took a test. It wasn't very conclusive. It looked like it could have been positive but the line was very faint so I thought it was just too early to tell so was going to do another one when I got back from holiday. About five days after my due date I went to the toilet and there was blood. I thought it would stop but it didn't. I was out hiking the Milford Track so was in the middle of nowhere (the hike hadn't been too strenuous and I'm used to doing a lot of exercise) and didn't know what to think. I had tampons with me so had to use them. It's now been five days and there is still blood. My husband thinks that my period must have been late but I'm usually never that late. How would I know if I had a miscarriage? My breasts were sore about a week before my period was due and I was sure I must have been pregnant. They were sore right up until the bleeding started. Now they are no longer tender.

I only just arrived back from holiday tonight so haven't had a chance to see my doctor. I don't know if it was just a case of a late period or if I was pregnant but miscarried. I didn't have really bad pains when the bleeding started but I was quite crampy.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm having very light spotting, but it is continious - in that every time I go to the toilet, there is blood when I wipe. I am 6 weeks pregenant.

I want to get this checkout, but who should I see
My regular GP
Midwife (Am going to a birth centre, due to see them for the first time on Saturday)
Or A GP that deals wtih pregnancy/birth, a list was given to me by my GP
Or should i just go down to emergency?

Well I'm still not pregnant so I'm certainly not an expert on these matters but if I were you, if it's spotting then I would go and see your GP about it. It may be nothing but at least you can find out now as otherwise you are just going to worry yourself sick about it. You don't want to stress yourself out even more.

I hope all is ok. I know you must be feeling rather anxious but stay positive.

Hi there, my name is mel and i am new to this site. I have a question and hopefully someone can help me. Yesterday after i came home from my 35 week app, i went to the toilet and i had a reasonably large amount of discharge or mucus with blood through it and later it happened again. Now at present i have nothing. I have not yet had an internal throughout this pregnancy. This is my fourth child and i was induced with all but not due to medical reasons.

Has anyone had a feel of there cervix? I did this to see if i could tell how far dilated i was. If anyone has done this could you tell me if you had any blood once you had finished.

Ok this might contain a bit TMI but here goes... i'm just wondering if anyone has experience any bleeding mid/ late in pregnancy? I am 28 weeks pregnant with my second bub. When i went to the toilet 2 days ago i noticed some very very slight bleeding.. i wouldn't call it bleeding really it was more like streaking (again sorry TMI) when i wiped. There wasn't enough to leave anything on my undies and it was only just noticable.. sort of like a light red/dark pink streak only about 1cm long and then when i wiped again there was about half that. I haven't noticed anything since and bub is still kicking and strong.. i'm a bit worried but i figure since it wasn't much it couldn't be anything bad. Its happened before about a month ago, again when i went to the toilet and there was just a tiny tiny bit.. that was after DH and i had been getting a bit loved up if you know what i mean.. no penetration though so i don't know what would have caused it ( so so sorry TMI again i know).
I see my OB on Thursday so i'll metion it then and see what she thinks, just though i'd post and see if anyone has had a similar experience. I keep freaking myself out thinking it might be an early sign of pre term labour.. am i being silly? I had a LEEP done about a year and a half ago and sadly we lost a bub at 6 weeks last year (don't know if it had anything to do with the leep) so in the back of my mind i'm always scared my cervix will open before bubs ready to come out, every night i pray :pray: he'll stay in till he's cooked;).. i know thats silly but i can't help worrying about it.. especially with this bleeding/streaking.
What do other ladies think? Any advice or experiences would be great :)

I am approx 7 weeks and have had spotting for about three days...Have told my partner that I am probably miscarrying.. Seems to be the only way I can handle this.. I have read so many stories and am optimistic a little... but scared stupid..Don't want to go to a doctor...I have two wonderful children and am putting all my positive thoughts with them but can't help feeling that there may be some hope....but scared silly... This forum is great... I had two miscarriages previouly and just can't help thinking Oh dear not again...Needed to vent...please keep posting...it makes me feel that although I know I am not the only one I can at least read what is happening to others....

However I just did a PT and it was negative...But this forum at least has made me remain sane.. I do have two children and I am really blessed...However as many know...it still hurts...HUGS and goodluck for you.....

Right now im 10 weeks pregnant this is my first pregnancy and when i was a little past 7 weeks i had spotting and the next morning passed out on my living room floor. The ambulance came took me to the hospital and while i was waiting i got up to use the restroom and i passed a clot. i eas so scared and demanded they see me right away. They did an ultrasound and everthing was ok. I saw my baby's heart beating. It was such a relief. Then 3 days later i had a brownish discharge and started to panic again. Now i am 10 weeks and there has been no more bleeding and the baby is doing great. Every woman is different. But i wouldnt worry to much

Oh my gosh...what scary stuff you must be going through...am so glad that you and the little one are doing OK,,,Pregnancy is so scary and so thrilling at the same time..
Take care of yourself and keep me posted...Sarah Jane...hope you are doing OK too.. I am glad that there is a forum to express feelings about it... To talk to loved ones is so hard.. You want to remain strong but can't, whereas talking in this forum feels so enlightening and free...although a few of the abbreviations do concern me...

I'm new to this internet forum stuff so i hope i've got this right on how to post stuff! I only just found this site and i want to acknowledge how helpful it is. I have a story to add because i am currently experiencing what some of you havedescribed: warning this could contain tmi.

My husband and I decided to start trying for kids 4 months ago. I had been on the pill for 9 years consistently and had always had regular periods. When i came off the pill in April 08 i had a withdrawal period but nothing since... no periods... no pain... nothing. I went to see my local GP on 7th August and we were doing some tests to see what my ovaries were doing... progesterone, prolactin, oestrogen etc. Imagine my surprise when she called to say i was pregnant! Obviously we have no idea how far we are because i have no LMP date.

My husband has been away for work lately and i've only seen him a handful of times so we figure we must be at least 6 weeks preg. This is our first pregnancy. We are elated.

So on friday night i was going to the toilet.. and i was straining a little... and noticed a tiny streak of fresh red blood on loo paper. Freaked... spent the night hysterical. Since then have had 2 days of dark brown spotting... not on undies... not needing a pad. I was using a panty liner and literally had about a 5c piece size of spotting each day. Always on the loo paper when i wiped though.

Saw my doctor and she was about as helpful as my husband! Kind... but unhelpful! :) I have an ultrasound tomorrow.

I am absolutely freaking out. I cant concentrate on anything. All i keep thinking is 'have i lost it'. I want desperately to believe i havent and i have read so many inspiring stories... but there is always that little bit of pessimism. I know these things happen for a reason.

I just want everyone to know that i'm thankful for the stories i read which keep me level headed...that it doesnt matter how much you know or how much you read we all get freaked by these things... and the funny thing is I am a doctor and i still dont have a clue what is going on! haha

Well i didnt even make it to the ultrasound. My beta hCG came back today at 1400 and we found out we are about 6-7wks along. My 2 days of light spotting (dark brown.. not even enough for a panty liner let alone a pad) turned into a real scare when i had a shower tonight and saw tiny clots and fresh blood. It was exactly like having a period... cramps and aches in lower back, bloated feeling, plenty of blood when i wiped but not really any on pad.

Got to hospital an hour later... waited for several more... then finally got to see the O&G reg. They actually sounded positive that i hadnt passed huge 50c piece size clots and hadnt soaked a pad or more than one. I had a speculum exam... it showed we have lost the bub.... thankfully i didnt pass any tissue, but during the exam they removed quite a bit. I tried to keep a strong face. I need an ultrasound in the morning to see if i need a D&C. I think i am in shock.

The pain has gone but now i just feel empty. I am so mad because i had so much to offer. I know that isnt rational.. i know it was natures way of saying something wasnt right, that this is for the best. It doesnt feel any better though. My poor hubby is devastated... he is blocking the phone calls from my several siblings and parents. I just dont know how i am going to get through the night.

I just had to update everything.. it is almost like a release writing on this forum. I wish things were different... but for my negative experience there is likely to be someone having a positive experience out there somewhere.

Oh Emmykate :hug:, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss :(. It is such a sad and confusing time. Allow yourself to feel any emotion you need to. It is such a shock to go through a m/c. Just to give you some hope, I had a m/c at around 6 weeks in January of last year and was pregnant again by February with my now nearly 10 month old son.

I hope all goes well with your scan and you won't need a D&C :hug:.

Thanks Trish. Just got out of bed for the first time since getting out of hospital. Didnt need an ultrasound afterall because i am hardly bleeding at all. They just want to follow me up with bhCG and an anti D injection cos i'm O neg. I have insisted on an ultrasound later in the week though - just to check there are no retained products... i dont want anymore troubles later on. The hardest thing was watching them remove tissue during the internal exam and put it in a jar - my unborn baby in a jar. That was miserable for myself and my husband.

I realise that m/c is a common phenomena. I know there was nothing i could do. I know it is completely irrational for me to be angry - particularly when i have a sister who has had 6 abortions and that just makes me mad at the moment. I know my time will come, hopefully sooner rather than later... but i'm scared now of conceiving again in case the same thing happens. I know this is a natural reaction too. Nothing can stop me from feeling completely lousy at the mo and i have lost a little faith in God (i'm not hugely religious but i feel a little let down).

Hi all! I am about 5 weeks along and have had some brownish discharge with some watery pink (sorry if TMI) staining for approx 2 days. I am freaking out! I have a OB appointment in about 45 minutes and I hope all is well! My spotting is about the size of 5c sometimes a little smaller even. I don't think I can have an u/s yet but we'll see I went to the WIC last night and had my hcg checked, so i'll have the results today. Quite frankly I think I might be further along, my last ms was about the equivelent to this which is abnormal, I took the HPT thinking I was pg (with other symtoms, sore boobs, nausea) but it was neg, and I left it at that. So I am either about 5 weeks or about 9 weeks I figure. Oh and no cramping yet. I keep thinking I am then it turns out to be wind :cryinglaugh: Anywho better get ready. Ill post when I get back from the dr

Went to the Dr and my HCG was 260. So it lookslike I am only 2-3 weeks instead of 5 weeks like they thought. Everything else DR was not to worry about. Going in tomorrow to get another HCG to make sure all is well and the little ones is growing! :pray:

Good luck with your second HCG, and I'm glad they said not to worry. If it helps, I had lots of spotting & bleeding with my current PG, and it all went on to be fine. I also found that my symptoms were very different with a successful PG compared to a PG that m/ced. I had MORE PG symptoms with the one that didn't stick - go figure huh! So it goes to show that absence or presence of symptoms isn't necessarily the key.

I know how stressful it is, so hang in there & keep posting - all the best :hug:

I know it has been a while since someone replied to this thread but I am hoping someone can help me. I recently found out I am pregnant for the 3rd time this year. My 2 previous pregnancies ended in miscarriages so of course I am pariniod. I am trying to figure out how far along I am but I am a little confused. My last full period was in August but last month 6 days after when my period was due I had what I originally thought might have been my period. my periods are pretty regular and usually 3 to 5 days long. This was less than 24 hours but it was decently heavy and I had some cramping like in a normal period. Could this have been just a short period or could it have been implantation bleeding or break through bleeding? I don't know much about either so I am hoping someone can help me.

Hi everyone. Wow thank goodness for this forum! I am 6 weeks pregnant, I found out last week. So imagine my horror after discovering some spotting last night, which turned into heavy bleeding today. As I have had a m/c 6 years before, I am absolutely terrified that this pg will have the same fate. I did not realise how common blding in pg can be. I went to see my doc, and he sent me for blood test, I have an u/s tomorrow, so I am anxiously waiting till then.

It is very re-assuring to know that others have been through similar problems, and have had a happy outcome.

Think I may be/have been pregnant (just over 6wks, tests all show neg though, waiting to try again) but have had heavy, bright red bleeding for last 24 hours. Pretty sure I've m/c. Would love to know how the rest of you are going...
