You can certainly teach yourself. If you get stuck you can search for tutorials online. And if you have a local sewing shop (an independent, not spotlight or lincraft) most run classes really cheap
You can borrow books from the library that show you how & you can purchase beginner patterns from the sewing counter

    Enjoy!

I was thinking of this thread today as I put a fresh table cloth on the kitchen table. They are really easy to make... lots of good straight-line sewing practise.

Yeah I was going to say that. You'll find kazillions of cool stuff to do. I especially love things like baby booties/fleece slippers, because it has some "effort" in it, BUT big BUT it takes so little fabric that you don't feel to bad when it goes south and you have to throw it away. I wholeheartly agree that you can teach yourself to sew ... with a little help from google

I did some sewing in grade 8 and 9, and my mom was/is a pretty decent seamstress. I just started sewing again and have even bought myself a second hand serger (life is just SOOO much easier). I can't wait for the kids to go to bed so that I can mess up my fabric stash and make things.

Oh - try making longies - google for free patterns. They are really easy to sew and so darn quick!!

    Goodluck!!!
