I'm working on one that was intended to be finished when Sam was born... 4 months later I'm down to three and a half panels left to stitch.
The reason I'm wondering if anyone has ever done one is because I'm after some advice on how to finish it off. The fringing around the outside edge should be fine - but what about covering the back of the stitched panels? Should I? If so, how?
How are you going with this BW? To be honest I'm not sure what you mean... afgan = throw rug? What type of fabric are you stitching on? Sounds interesting!
It is pretty much a throw rug, Bath. It's a 14 count even-weave fabric which is woven into square panels with a slightly more decorative border in between them. I finished the cross-stitch a while ago, but it kind of stopped there. I'll have to take it with me when I visit mum and get her to help me finish off the fringing etc. If you google "dancing bear afghan" and look at images, you'll see exactly what it is.
I usually get a nice even weave cream fabric to cover the back to stop any of the threads being pulled etc if they get caught on something, especially if it going to be used. If it is only for decoration, it doesn't really matter.
