Making your own draught stopper (door snake)

We are going to need quite a few of these and thought I might make my own, mainly because I can't find any in shops here!

So, what fabric would you suggest? Obviously it needs to be a heavier fabric, I'm not too clued up on fabric types so 'names' would be great!

And what would you fill it with? I've read about filling it with sand (good option but need to find sand as well), wheat/rice (but tend to attract mice) or kitty litter (sounds like the best option but don't know if I want door snakes filled with kitty litter!).

    Any help would be great

My mum used to make them when we were kids and used corduroy. Filled them with the stuff you stuff toys with. When they got dirty they went into the washing machine.

Sand you can get by the bag at bunnings for not much.
I'd put the sand in a stocking (pantyhose) to hold it in and then make a cover in maybe callico, homespun?
Often you see them in quilters cotton though.

Hey chick, I was just on Martha Stewart and she has a "draft dodger' as one of her winter sewing projects.

I have done them in all sorts of fabrics. My fave was a hot pink satin - sturdy though. Check your op shops for funky old curtains, they're fun too.
