I am thinking of making some bibs for a little person who is a big dribbler, and wondered whether backing them with PUL might help keep the wetness away from her clothing and skin.
Her bibs are changed regularly (6 x day) but the plain cotton ones let the wetness on to her clothes.
I bought some bibs on the weekend, that are kinda like what you describe, but the other way around, IYKWIM? They have a wipeable front, and a fabric back... If you google Gaia & Ko bib, you should be able to see what I'm talking about...mine are very similar, but a different brand...
I think PUl on the back is a great idea....if you have a dribbler however I would prolly think about some sort of absorbant layer at the front to soak up the dribble.....maybe do a nice cotton print front, flannel or thin bamboo layer then the PUL......just a thought....
Melbel, that's what i was thinking. just playing around with material for the front layer to see what works best- i have flannelette, chenille, and cotton that i have already here.
I was checking through my material cupboard and found some left over curtain material. It is the stuff with backing to keep the sun out, but looks water proof. I have made a couple of trial bibs using them. One has curtain material on back and flannel on the front. Second bib has 3 layers with curtain layer in the middle, chenille on one side and cotton on the other side. I am just working out how to do the joining bit at the back so hopefully i can make it wearable with either side outwards.
I will try them out and report back in case anybody else is interested. I am still keen to try the PUL as well. Do you reckon the PUL would be ok as an outer layer? ie against the bub? or better to sandwich it.
Ok, i tried the curtain material and it isn't dribble proof. The little one is a big dribbler and goes through 8 to 10 bibs a day. Just trying to keep the wetness from reaching her chest.
I have found some PUL and going to order it. Will it completely stop the moisture from getting through?
Will it 'sweat' if it is against her chest? I can sandwich the PUL between two layers if this is the case, but will this allow the PUL to dry?
hopefully take 2 will work. i tried 3 different bib patterns, so i know the one i like now!
With nappies PUL is usually a hidden layer with either minky or polar fleece so it isn't against the skin. That kind of thing would work well for the bib too.
There is also the option of using a high end fleece such as malden mills which will prevent a lot of moisture from seeping through.
PUL should stop the moisture from getting through but it does get saturated eventually and will then leak. It's the tradeoff for a breathable barrier.
Where are you looking to get it from? There is some good cheap stuff available at bubbaearth for about $10 for a nice wide piece that yu will be able to get quite a lot from. It's cheap because it isn't fancy but good for a hidden layer. I have a bit here I can send you if you want to have a look at it first. PM me your address if you like
I have had a look at BubbaEarth and just working out how to buy PUL through them. They have some that are 23cm or 33cm which would be fine for what i want.
