Dr Seuss definitely because I get tongue tied!
DH was reading to our boys tonight while I was getting their beds made up and it got me thinking...which bedtime stories do you really dislike reading to your children? Or which books do you skip a few pages? Our boys share a room and have 2 stories read to them every night. They each choose a book that they want read and some nights, we're groaning 'no, not that one again'.... some Dr Seuss books are pretty long, too. The Library Lion, although a great book can get a bit tedious after the 100th read. Mr Men books drive me nuts, there's just no flow - they feel so stunted. We all love The Gruffalo and Tiddler. There was one we borrowed from the library called Isabella's Garden, which was lovely and our 2 yr old memorized it, line for line once. Other times, I wonder how on earth some books got published? What books are on your groan list?
Dr Seuss definitely because I get tongue tied!
At the moment Hairy McLary and the Caterwaul Caper. If I have to make that rawrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr noise one more time I'll go spare. She's not meant to be so picky about her books yet
You Choose. It's a great book but DD2 picks it A LOT!!
The Dr Seuss Scrambled Eggs one. I have actually hidden it now!
And totally understand what you mean about the Little Miss/Mr Men books!! They are sooo tedious.
Yes, Limeslice, we've also been known to bury a few books where they hopefully won't be found!
Emmjayt - Scarface Claw - rawrrrrrrr, the toughest tom in town!
There's some lines from books where if a word is mentioned in conversation, DH and I just automatically think of particular books that we've read to death or we know the book, line for line (Time for Bed) and who knows this gem:
There's a house inside my Mummy, where my little brother grows, or maybe it's my sister, no one really knows...
Thats disgusting as i end up PMSL so much that kids get excited lol
A new house for mouse
Pete the sheep
Hairy Mclarey from Donaldsons dairy
Not at bedtime, but really dislike the Hippo on my roof series.
The Mr Men Little Miss books - so tedious and really quite complicated - we have a Little Miss Birthday book, and she can't think what is perfect present for Mr Wrong - in the end she gets him a Christmas present so he is right for once - as an adult it takes me a little while to get my head around the concept so no idea what age children really aiming at. DD doesn't care though and still asks for it to be read.
DH hates Round the World with Ant and Bee - I quite like it, he doesn't like it because it is long - but they visit a lot of countries so what can he expect - is also one I remember from childhood so I think that makes me look on it more fondly.
Any book. I can't stand reading aloud to kids (including my own!) I did it though, because I am a good parent![]()
The girls had some stupid book about elephants going on a holiday. Made little sense and the pictures had little speech bubbles, that I could never quite work out if to read them all not. Of course once DD1 could read more, she would always point them out to me.
Of, almost forgot. A Clarence Bean book, can't remember the title and don't want to go find it to look it up. All the text is higglty pigglty, more for a kid who can read, than for a parent to read out.
You see, I don't need some books to read them, though DS loves Hairy McLary from Donaldson's Dairy I find myself reciting it. Though if I stuff up the order of the dogs DS pulls me up on it - which is good I guess as it shows he is listening and looking.
Where the Wild things are - drives me nuts!
If I don't like the story or it's too long I make my own story up luckily DD hasn't pulled me up on it yet!
LOL I think I know that book word for word! Funny, his little brother is over a year old but Moo still loves this book.
I can't stand Mr Men books, so irritating!
A few golden books 'I'm A Truck' is the most hated.
Richard Scarry's 'Cars and Trucks and Things That Go' is too long but Moo loves it.
'Shoes From Grandpa'
There is a book called 'True Blue Santa' that DH and I automatically hated but we read it so much in the lead up to xmas that we both ended up loving it![]()
Yes, the Little Golden Books. I know we grew up with them, but the most of the stories are horrid. I just want to slap that whingy little tug boat or whatever it is.
Oh Shoes from Grandpa!! That is the tissue paper book, I love that one! LOL
My youngest just got a library book called the elephant and the bad baby.
Its long and stupid and he wants me to read it all the time! !!!!!
lol Hestia - we've got that 'I'm a Truck' book too and fortunately, one of our kids ripped half the pages out a long time ago and we can no longer read it
Bellany - that's the beauty of library books - they get returned and never borrowed again
I forgot to mention the Spot books. The boys seem to like these and for some reason I really can't stand that his mum is called Sally and never referred to as 'mum'. It's in the same category as the Mr Men books.
