Raymond E Feist - similar recommendations?

Anth is a die hard Feist fan, but we're kind of running out of books...
And because we're cheapskated who refuse to pay full price he's going to have to wait for #3 of the Darkwar Saga to come down in price.
I think we're also missing two from Serpentwar so I guess there's two books I need to get.

I just bought The Elenium Trilogy by Robert Jordan (I think) and someone else has recommended Sarah Douglass??

RAYRAY I saw you talking about Mr. Feist in chat one night, do you have any recs?

I loved Raymond E Feist ( Magician is a great book )and really enjoyed moving onto Robin Hobb.
Any of her books have been great, but earlier series seem to be better.
Similar sort of writing style, although I like her more than Ray
Didn't like Robert Jordans Wheel of Time series but haven't tried the one you mentioned....
Also, just finished Brisingr, the new book in the Eragon series by Christopher Paolini and LOVED it, great books. They made a kids movie about it, but don't let that put you off, it's a great series, not too young at all.
My favourite fantasty writer of all time is, without doubt, David Eddings. Loved his earlier books ( The Tamuli, The Belgariad and The Mallorean ) much more than the Elder Gods series though. Very funny books, but with such rich characters and story lines to go with them.
Aaaah, fantasy,.......my favourite genre of all time........

P.S. very jealous of your iPhone......

Thanks Sally, wooohoooo on Boy Squishy!!! Congrats!!

The Elenium trilogy is actually David Eddings, got them mixed up again , so definitely am happy that I got them - we also recently bought Eragon and Eldest, which is great as it sounds like he should enjoy them too! Will just have to get Brisinger.

Hopefully one day i will remember to sit down and finally read The Magician... Anthony has been begging me to for months!!

I have to say... love Eddings, love Douglas, love Hobb, kinda lukewarm on Jordan... This is giving me some added motivation to finally get my act together and read Magician, which is sitting around here. And Eragon, which is also sitting around unread.

As for other authors I've enjoyed (there was a huge thread I started along similar lines a while ago) - Jennifer Fallon, Katherine Kerr, Isobelle Carmody (although I am annoyed that she caught me out - I got so sick of waiting for the next book in the wheel of time series that I refuse to start a series until it's finished, but she got me!). Currently reading through a series by Ian Irvine - found it hard to get into at first, but I'm quite enjoying it now.

I've got many more, but they require getting up and checking bookshelves (who am I kidding! The bookshelf is overflowing! Checking the random piles of books scattered about the house!) to remind me of the authors names. They are just the recent ones, there's a lot more that I read and enjoyed years ago.

oooh I love Raymond Feist, he is my favourite. Do you have the single books too (i.e the ones that are not part of a series) "faerie tale" was great.
I had to get the newest one wile it was still in hardcover, so it would be the same size as the others (lol cant have them not liniing up in the bookcase!) So I normally get them at Target or BigW as there cheaper.

David Eddings I like, not so much Robert Jordan though i think thats cos the WOT series was just too long for me.

Terry Brooks is another one I've read reasonable recently so I havent read much but like the "genesis of Shannara" series.

Ian Irvine too, the "View from the Mirror" series. There were 4 books in all I think, and it took me about a third of the first one to get in to it, but after that I read all four in a weekend. Not so much similar in style to Feist though, just a good series.

Katharine Kerr has a brilliant Deverry series i've been collecting since 1990 (she has a website, just google her name)

Sheri S Tepper writes feminist eco-fiction ...she's brilliant too. and Mary Gentle, great fantasy/sword and sorcery writers. for SF with a hard edge, try Orson Scott Card and Peter F Hamilton

Rayray, that's the series I'm reading through. Knowing that someone else has found the same thing makes me think it's more the book than me. I was ready to give up at one point, but I'm glad I kept with it until it grabbed me.

I wouldn't bother with the wheel of time series, as far as I know the author died and rudely left the series unfinished.

I second going on to Robin Hobb after Feist, I have every single Feist book, can't get enough.

I also recommend Fire and Ice Series by George RR Martin, Those three authors are my top three.

All the others mentioned are great also.

I also like the Aurian series by Maggie Furey. At the time I got them it was the first female main character I had read. I re-read this series regularly

Love Feist here too! Others I like are Janny Wurts, Jennifer Fallon, Fiona McIntosh, Katherine Kerr, David Eddings.

I started the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan too and got up to book five. Just lost concentration on it, they are VERY long. DP got up to book eleven so he did better than I did Might get around to finishing it one day cause I can't leave the books unread once I've started

I second the David Eddings option. My Husband loves Eddings AND Feist! Belgariad is definitely a good place to start!

I absolutely loved The Magician. One of my favourite books for a while. Oh, how I wish I had time to read these days...

I enjoyed Eddings as well, but be aware that his books don't have the same scope as Feist's. Their best features are their accessibility - classic fantasy tropes, awesome characters, and a good read that you can put down and come back too later without having to work too hard to get back up to speed.

Love most of the people mentioned - did anyone say the Wurts series???

BW got me into Juillette Marillier, who I would also recommend.

If you are into one off books - Zettel and IV Jones are good.

Classics - how about Douglas Adams Hitchhikers, Asminov (must admit to only reading a few of these) or LOTRs???

DH liked Stephen King's Dark Tower - me not so much...

He has just recently finsihed a LOTR reread!
And I can't get him to go near Stephen King.
He's very picky and doesn't like to try new things but im sure his mind will change after a few mornings of no books on the train.

I definantly would reccomend Ian Irvine, start with the first series of The View from the Mirror. I loved them. Dh and I would fight over who got to read the next one. He then has a second series years in the future and a third series which he hasnt finished yet.

The Stephen King dark tower series I am having trouble getting DH to read those aswell. I have read them all and I must admit the first book is really boring the second gets better, but then you get really involved after that. It is a challenge but well worth it in the end.

Goodluck, there are sooooo many choices out there.

Ooh, great suggestions here, will enjoy my trip to the library this week!
Also the Witches of Eileannan by Kate Forsyth, great, strong women lead characters.
I too hate getting part way through a series and finding out the author is still writing so I have to wait for the next book grrr
BUT Isobelle Carmody is my second favourite author of all time, the new Obernewtyn book is great but I had no idea it was out, stumbled upon it in a bookshop a month ago and nearly lost my mind with excitement. She's frustrating because she has three unfinished series on the go and the last Obernewtyn book took 10 years to come out !!!

Oh forgot to mention. In the book Magician, they were fighting people from another world right? Well the guy who wrote magician has co-wrote with a woman another series based on the world from which the fighters came from. I have the books in storage so cant give you exact details, but I think there are 3 of them, starting with Daughter of the Empire. I REALLY enjoyed these books. Worth a try.

Sally-Yes I agree, nothing more annoying than not having a completed series to read. I too have had a little part when I have seen certain books, much to my mums amusement.
