Could this kill the e-book?

Well...ok I might be a little behind the times here, but I saw something yesterday that gave me an OH!-this-is-gonna-be-big thrill.

(OK, so I work in the library world, others may not be quite so excited)

The flipback book. So tiny, so light, so comfortable. Text is just as clear as a normal book. Makes you wonder why no one thought of it sooner!!

Has anyone else seen these?

They have been around for a little while, and they seem cool! But I don't think they will kill the e-book. I think they will just co exist.

No, I don't think I'm a fan. I like to have a decent size page to read, it seems kind of like reading on your iphone which is really really annoying. The thing i love mist about my kindle is no longer having to find somewhere to put all my books, so with this it looks like I would end up with stacks of them, just a smaller stack!

I like books that are books - I don't like flip-books because that means it's strange turning the page. I love a big, heavy book in my hands and I never jab the person next to me when turning a page - just as I don't elbow people when I eat. I like thick pages that I don't need to worry about tearing when I put it in my handbag.

I like e-readers too because then I have loads and loads of books and DH doesn't whinge there are books everywhere he looks.

DH is just as bad as me when it comes to books - we have about 10 bookshelves in our home, they're all completely loaded with books, with books on top of and in front of the books ... we're incourigible.

See, I love a good book too, but I think we're increasingly outnumbered (in ways we've haven't begun to grasp yet). Maybe not this year, but it's coming. I was excited because this is a way forward for real PAPER books. If not this, then perhaps in a tweaked format.

BTW, if you've held one in your hands, there's no difference in the appearance of the page, because when the book is open it's the same size as a regular paperback. The pages are more flimsy but they are smaller and cheaper, so more likely to compete with the e-book market.

I will have to show DH. He doesn't like the idea of the ebook as it will eventually one day kill his career as a librarian (so he says anyway).

Not sure I could see him reading one but hmmmm interesting.

DH is just as bad as me when it comes to books - we have about 10 bookshelves in our home, they're all completely loaded with books, with books on top of and in front of the books ... we're incourigible.

We like real books here too.
DH is in the process of turning the formal lounge in to a library with 5 Billy Bookcases - and only cos the ceiling is not high enough for the 2400mm ones with the ladder rail and ladder attached.

Wow I haven't semen those before. I work in the library world too marydean...but I have to say the kindle app on my iPhone has changed my world. I stopped reading books after having dd (babies in bed and too little time in the day etc) but after downloading the kindle app I am back into reading...I once again read in bed and when kids are occupied...it's great. I found dd would snatch a paper book out of my hand, but the iPhone...she's seen it all before.

there's an annual 2nd hand book sale out my way which we go to every year - you pay by the kilo.

so we just stock up annually, and buy 30-60 books each, and then get the occasional new book through book depository (free shipping is great when you have no time to get to the shops!!).

but we mostly read older books which are already here.

yes, but I hear chatter about there being another in September or October ...

Blackburn High School - give 'em a bell ...

$3-$4 p/kg for hardbacks, $4-$5 p/kg for paperbacks.
VHSs and DVDs and vinyl records, etc...

an absolute winner!

I go in with a list of titles/authors I'm looking for, and I usually nab at least half.

or I go with the view to get 10 autobiographies, and 10 trashy romance and 20 drama/thrillers.

and of course *loads* of children's books ...

Can you imagine Harry Potter printed on one of those or War and Peace? It might be OK for some books, but certainly not all. I don't think this will be as enduring as e-books.
