Great kids book- talks about all types of families (incl gay/adoption)
I have been looking out for a good kids book that talks about adoption, and the ones i have seen have been fairly horrible.
BUT, today at the ABC shop, i found this great book called the Family Book by Todd Parr
Some of the words are
Some families are big. Some families are small.
Some families are the same colour. Some families are different colours.
All families like to hug each other
.....
Some families adopt children
Some families have two mums or two dads
...
It just talks about all the things that some families have or do, and says things that all families do. lots of bright colours, just gorgeous.
My store actually stocks this Todd Parr book (among others), but one you might be interested in (about the facts of life, including sperm, egg and embryo donation) is Where Did I Really Come From by Narelle Wickam. We own this (stock it too) and it is really fantastic. Bit of controversy of late, mostly around the recommended age, but I find it more realistic than confronting. You can PM me if you want some more info xx
nah, the book doesn't go into how families are made just talks about what some families have or do or like or look like.
i liked how it was quite natural to talk about different families in different ways. Some kids books just force an issue, and end up increasing the feeling of difference due to the issue (e.g. adoption).
He does some other books too which explore different "versions" of families/mummys/daddys as well as ones on feelings. We have a few of them and the kids really enjoy them.
They were on sale recently at the Abc Shops reduced from $14.95 to $4.95 so I picked up a few for future birthday presents.
