I've just finished reading Memoirs of a Geisha. Haven't read it since it came out years ago and didn't remember most of it. Lovely book.

What are you reading right now? Come in and tell us!

I'm trying out a kindle with the game of thrones series but having a bit of trouble getting into it - not sure if it's not finding the time to read, the fact I'm using a kindle sideways so I can get the text big enough to read comfortably, or it's the story. Might see if I can get a hard copy of the first book from the library to see if it's the kindle or the story. If its the kindle I think I'll have to try some other novels on the kindle in a different format (game of thrones are in PDF format for me)

Man I want all the ones Heather mentioned!

Intrigued by 50 shades of grey too!

I'm reading another Lee Child, good old Jack Reacher. Love him!

50 shades of grey is number 2 on Amazon kindle sales

From what I've read I'm not convinced its my type of book!!

Leckert- I don't enjoy reading PDF docs on my kindle. The text is too small and I dont like the format. My DH has a few of his Buddhist texts on my kindle in PDF. Unfortunately it isn't possible to increase the text size like you can with a kindle book. That setting isn't available when opening a PDF book. Can you download a kindle version? It will be much easier on your eyes.

Oh Jack Reacher My local library is running a competition. You can win a book voucher - to enter, you nominate your fave literary character. I feel like I should nominate someone from a great work or a classic, but I just keep coming back to Jack! It feels tacky but there's something about him
OceanP, have your read Second Son? The short story, where Jack is a kid?

Ash I love Reacher too. He's just, Reacher. Never tries to be anything else, never tries to apologise, just is who he is.

I think you should nominate him

I've got Second Son downloaded ready to go but I'm working up to it, reading the ones that I'd missed in the general series first.

That's a bummer about PDFs on Kindle. I adore my kindle!

My school library had bought a couple of kindles last year before I started as teacher librarian there so I haven't worked out the specs for my kindle (I've borrowed it to try and work out how it might be used in a school setting). I don't want to spend $$ on something I may only have access to for the year as that's how long my contract is for. Might have to go browse amazon to see if there's a book I'm likely to read for free or cheap so I don't feel like I'm wasting money as we can't afford to buy a personal one for me atm.

I do know that PDFs aren't easy to resize the text on the kindle without being fiddly to read which is why I'm reading it sideways.

Audax- I finished Midwives. Wow, it ended in an unexpected way and then I couldn't sleep (I finished it at 2am). I really enjoyed the book. Have you seen the movie version? I haven't.

How are you going with Game of Thrones now Leckert?
OceanP- I really enjoyed Second Son. I was a bit hesitant to read it. Wasn't interested in reading about Jack as a child. But, wow, I was wrong! I could have read a full length version. It ended too soon for my liking.

I have started The Lincoln Lawyers, another Connelly novel.

I love Jack Reacher too but am soooooooooooo disappointed with their choice for movie casting. Couldn't have got it more wrong as far as I'm concerned.

Just started Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks. I really like her writing style - so easy to magine yourself there. Given up on Shantaram for the moment even though I'm really enjoying it. Decision makes no sense really but there you go.

Yes, yes! So true! Think of the exact opposite of Jack, and you'd think of Tom. Every novel emphasises Jack's height and strength. Jack never meets anyone taller than him! Nearly everyone is taller than Tom! ridiculous.
I loved Shantaram But you have to be in the right head space for particular books. At the moment, I am enjoying reading Connelly books and birth related novels. Other times I am in the head space for more intellectual stimulation, and that's when I reach for the non-fiction socio-political texts!

I read some crap Lee Child released about Jack Reacher's size being more a metaphor of his character rather than a reality of body size, that Tom Cruise oozes strength etc. Such a crock - can't believe it is anything more than a disappointing sellout to Hollywood and big dollars for movie sales. So many more guys that would be more suitable than Tom Cruise. Mickey Mouse would be an improvement . . .

I'm really enjoying Shantaram Ash - just don't get enough quiet time to sit and really enjoy it so need to give it a rest until things settle down so I can give it the attention it deserves. I love Connelly books too - good, quick reads that you don't need to pay 100% attention to but still get you in.

I haven't got to borrowing game of thrones in hard copy but I did find a different kindle book to read and enjoyed reading that so I think that I need to get either game of thrones in hard copy or see if I can get it in a kindle friendly format.

I read that ludicrous justification too, Lulu. There is nothing metaphoric about Jack Reacher's size. The books constantly refer to his size- his large shoe size, how he looks down at most people due to his height, etc. All the other actors will have to be shorter than Tom to make it authentic, lol! Tom is just too polished. I think I will have to see the movie just so I can assess how well the metaphoric approach works! Does anyone know when it is due out or is it still in production?

Nikky- there is a typo in sloane's post- it is LEE Child. Try and read them in order of release if you decide to give the books a go.
Leckert- that is sounding positive then. Once you get a hard copy of the book you should get right in to it.
