We go for the leaded version here....aka normal Coke.

Although before i was pregnant it was always Diet Coke.

But now there is soemthing about ice cold coke that i cant refuse. Also i love it in Bali, skull it really quickly its very thirst quenching.

Heavy coke drinkers here. The diet stuff (especially zero) makes me feel really unwell and gives me bad headaches. Plus I don't trust artificial sweetners. I have 2 glasses a day, only with meals. DH has a lot more. Funnily, when I was pregnant I went off coke completely. Couldn't stand it, weird huh. You have to be careful with diet drinks as artificial sweeteners can actually increase your appetite (apparently for sweet things) also, diet drinks have huge amounts of sodium compared with regular drinks - not good for fluid retention as well as making you drink more.

If your goal is not to put on weight then switch to water.

Soft drinks that contain artificial sweeteners have been found to actually make you put on weight if you consistently use them over a period of years. The chemicals make you feel hungrier and crave food therefore you will end up eating more which will often in turn end up with you putting on weight. They can also cause headaches and dizziness. These chemicals can have toxic affects on your body causing things like rashes & diarrhea (I'm sure you've seen the fine print on the sugarfree gum).

As for the sugared kind. Drinking 3 glasses of it a day can cause tooth decay (due to the acidic nature of soft drink). They contain no nutritional value and only add up your calorie intake, mostly refined sugars, therefore can over time make you gain weight.

All that caffeine is no good, particularly when TTC or pg.

I know I sound pretty anti soft drink but I used to drink heaps of diet cola in my younger years (hoping not to put on weight, but I did). I stopped drinking it when I read some pretty nasty facts on it. I switched to regular cola afterwards and didn't stack on the weight so I think in me they have about the same effect.

I now don't drink any cola (due to the m/c risk with the caffeine) and I drink only occasional regular soft drink. I will not touch anything at all that has artificial sweetener in it. I think we get enough chemicals in our daily life without drinking them purposely.

In our household we have switched to drinking water & watered down cordial - the kind that has no artificial flavours or colours. I only have to watch my 4yo step daughter after she has ingested a glass of raspberry soft drink and see how crazy she goes to notice what a bad effect it has on her.... yes her father is silly enough to give it to her on special occasions.

Wow, Satya, i didnt' know that caffeine can cause m/c? or increase the risk of a m/c... geez i'm glad i don't drink coffee! I am a tea drinker (1-2 per day, no more) and I only have 1 glass of diet softdrink per day... sometimes none...
I love cordial and i think i might go back to drinking cordial because at least that way i am drinking heaps of water with it (I find it hard to drink 6-8 glasses water per day) ... what brand cordial do you get that has no artificial colours/flavours in it?... thanks
When we TTC (Sept) i think i'll get DF to stop drinking diet cola/pepsi max or at least cut it down to 1 glass per day... as i'm worried what the caffeine/chemicals in it may do to the feotus when its developing etc....

I drink Dr Pepper.. 1 can a day usually.

Though if you wanna lose weight, cut out the soft drink all together. DH did this as he was getting alot of stomach acid and lost a heap of weight!

Even though it says diet, i dont think its that good for you.

ETA... yep during 1st Trimester i didnt touch any caffeine because its linked to m/c. Though youre allowed to have up to 300mg of caffeine a day. After the 1st tri, i had 1 coffee in the morning.. that was it.

    I hardly touch the stuff

I would rather have water or a juice, mainly because i just feel like crap after drinking it. Maybe once every 3 months, i'll get a craving for a sip of coke, so i'll buy a can and not finish it

I think i just got into the habit of not drinking fizzy drinks because i've had really bad eczema for years, and fizzy drinks are very drying for the skin...

Diet coke fan here. I just prefer the taste. I was addicted when I was pregnant, but as I'm allergic to oranges I mainly drink water - it's easier to come by.

I never drink soft drink. We only have water in the house, saves having to monitor what we drink. I have heard very bad things about diet soft drinks, not good for you at all (infact can cause some horrendous complications. Probably worth googling ). I just think that something with absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever, is not a good thing. xo

my hubby and i used to drink soft drink al the time then he realised that he was nhealthy due to chest pains - from then on its vaery rarely that we have soft dring in the house - his parents have to bring their own as i now feel like vomiting most of the time i even smell it. we now go thru about 6 litres of juice a week.

but i have been having coke craving too but keep it down as if has caffene in it. for sweet cravings i have apple and guava juice its just sweet enough to not be sickly - but if you are a heavy soft drink person - try carbonated water - you still get the fizzy sensation but not the crud thats in it

yes soda water + cordial added is really nice! I might start getting onto that instead of diet coke/pepsi etc.... glad i only drink 1-2 per day though, not like 1L or more!
