DH bought rolled oats the other day & I would love some porridge, but I'm a tad picky.
I've only ever eaten Grandma's porridge. She made it in the microwave with milk, thats all I know. We lost her 8 years ago, so I can't ask her, but I've never, ever liked it any other way!
I do have a feeling she put brown sugar in it, but I was under 10 I think, the last time I saw her make it, so I have no idea!
Please help!!
did you get quick oats? i only used quick oats in the microwave but when Ive bought the wrong ones ive cooked them in a pot with milk just on low else it makes a huge mess on the stove, I just keep adding more milk and tasting to make sure they are cooked. then once cooked I like honey on mine but DS likes brown sugar on his.
Ive tried using water but I dont get the same creamy result.
Oh and the instant sachets rock!!
fingerscrossed someone else replys with some clearer instructions
Thanks. They are just home brand ones.
I've tried the sachets, but they weren't the same & yeah, Grandma's were really creamy.
I miss her cooking so much!
Nannas/grandmas are the best cooks,
When we used to go stay at nannas when we were kids I always remember waking up to her cooking porridge on the wood stove
I can't give exact measurements, but I just put about a cup of rolled oats in an microwave jug, cover with milk and zap for about 6 or 7 mins. Stir and if it needs it add more milk and zap a bit more. I put brown sugar on top afterwards. I used to put a bit of salt in it, but stopped that once DS1 started eating porrige.
i do i cup of oats soaked in 1 cup of boiled water in a saucepan ( for as long as you want to leave them say 30 mins) then add 1 cup of milk and cook on the stove top, top with brown sugar!
its still chunky! taste is ok, but after something like 10 minutes they are still chunky! hers were always really smooth....maybe i'm just a sook??? lol, maybe this is what they are like?

I do quick oats on the stove top.. cos i have non stick saucepans it doesn't make a mess and super easy to clean.. My DH reckons mine are the best he's ever had including his nana's lol.. I find the way to get them creamy is to use low fat milk (or just milk) instead of water in them. I find this is a great way to build up my calcium levels too cos i can't bring myself to drink a glass of milk. I put about a cup into a saucepan and about 2.5 cups of milk roughly... ( i just poor till it looks right) and stir for about 7 minutes. then sprinkle with brown sugar.. it's soo nice on these cold mornings.. actually i might go have some now.
I have never learnt to do them in the microwave, They always end up gluggy when i try to do it that way.
I'm gonna make myself unpopular by saying this but the only time I'm ever really happy with my porridge is when I use the Uncle Toby's oats..the whole ones not the instant oats...have tried homebrand and other brands like Lowan and they're all still kinda chaff-y. I add 3 times the amount of liquid to the amount of oats (eg 1 cup oats, 2 cups milk 1 cup water OR half cup oats, 1 cup milk, half cup water) and do it on the stove top...get it boiling then leave it simmering away on the lowest possible heat for a good 15-20 mins. Stir often. I have noticed it sticks more to the pot when I use the very low fat milk - (I think it's because they add extra protein to the milk in the form of skim milk powder) but I never mind, I just fill the pot with water and leave it soak for an hour or two, it comes off really easily then.
But TBH that takes a little too much effort first thing in the AM so I've just lashed out on some instant sachets. Can't comment cos I havne't had them yet.
I do both... microwave and stove top. I use the uncle toby's traditional oats (I don't get the quick oats). If only one person wants porridge I cook 'em inthe microwave (1 part oats and 2 parts water)... always add a pinch of salt.
If I have everyone wanting them I cook them on the stove top, covered with plenty of water and a pinch of salt, bring them to the boil and leave them on low until they look yummy
When I serve them I have them with milk, sugar and a dollop of butter
Sometimes I have them with dried fruit and honey... what ever I feel like... yummo!!
I use whole oats, soaked overnight in boiling water. If I use 1/2 cup oats, then I put 1/2 cup boiling water, cover and leave it overnight. Then in the morning, I put in about 1/2 cup full cream milk, zap in the microwave for about 1 1/2mins, than add what ever you want, I usally put in some brown sugar or honey with a banana. Yummeee!
I always found Uncle Tobys Oats the best too. I do mine for one person as 1 cup oats, 2 cups of milk. Then in the microwave for 1 minute and then 30 seconds bursts until it looks cooked. Can't remember how to do it on the stove but it always tasted the same for me and in the microwave was easiest in the wee hours of the morning!
Well I might let DH have these & try the uncle toby's. I thought I remembered her using them instead of homebrand, so maybe thats the only difference. Might try them one day.
i use the home brand ones.
i cook it on the stove with full cream milk and a tablespoon of brown sugar until he goes really gluggy. (porrige should bind your stomach closed the grandmas always said :P) Then when you serve it up you add a little more milk around it and then extra sugar on top to add crunch XD It's so bad for you, really.. yet oh so good :P
I use Carmens Oats here. Aus made and owned I find the stove top does a better job, I have had to do too many clean ups in the microwave so I don't bother. If I have time I let the oats soak for a bit in the morning before cooking.
DH loves his full of dried fruit, I can't stand it that way.
I remember my grandparents soaking the oats overnight for porridge in the morning so I think that is the traditional way of doing it. And they have to have salt!! IMO
