buying 'sides' of meat

anyone here buy sides of meat??
how do you find it?

im looking into buyin a half a cow with a friend, so 1/4 each, works out to $10kg for grass fed beef

My parents are farmers, so they get 'home grown' meat! Every few months dad takes in an extra lamb/steer for the butcher to cut up for them. It's great, and more economical than buying cuts of meat individually. Just make sure you have a big freezer Although if you're only getting 1/4 it won't be too bad. Also tell the butcher how you want it cut up, or if there is anything in particular you want in your box.

I LOVE it! Nothing better than having a freezer chock full of meat. One thing though if you are going halves with a friend, is make sure that where you are getting it from will do it up so you get a half of everything, otherwise one of you will have all the rump and one will have all the scotch fillet/t-bones etc. And there is a LOT of meat in half a beast. You could also ask them if they can do you some sausages too and mince beef instead of just straight cuts of meat.

If we had a deep freezer we'd do it. But we just dont have the space unfortunately

sherie they do it in all different cuts so we'd just have to spend some time spliting it, will ask her more questions!!

Sweet! That makes it easier. One thing you will have to remember to do if you only have a small freezer is rotate the meat around in there for a few days to make sure it all gets frozen and preferably have it cold as it goes in so your freezer doesn't work so hard. When we do a sheep/beast we will layer it with what we already have in there. Oh and make sure that with the gravy/chuck steak that they dice it for you otherwise it can be hard to tell what it is if you look at a frozen slab of meat and you don't want to use good cuts of meat in a stew accidentally.

Oh yeah I got burnt with this...we paid the same but somehow ended up with all the stewing steak

not yet darl.. need to look into getting a small chest freezer still.... though its still on the cards
