Not sure where to post this. Not sure what to do about it. I was brought up eating everything and 2 years ago I stopped eating red meat because I couldn't stand the thought of eating an animal. I continued to eat chicken as I couldn't actually see the blood so I convinced myself it was ok. Now everytime I want to eat chicken I see the bird in my mind and it just puts me off. I would love to just quit eating animals but how the hell do you do that with 3 kids in the house who still eat everything and 34 years of eating meat? It just makes me feel gross to eat meat. Anyone had this experience?
I'm vegetarian but nobody else in my house is - however I have been veg for almost 20 years and DP eats what I cook for him so he is veg unless he eats out and orders meat. I have to go to work but will come back and chat about logistics later.
Not me personally, however my yoga teacher is vegan now and described exactly the same thing - she could visualise the animal. She also finds it difficult to cook meat for her family (her DH & DS are meat eaters) but will. I think most of their meals are vegetable and grain based and the meat is more of a side dish for her DH & DS. I think she used to eat eggs but went 'off' them. I don't have any other information. GL with your decision
Ok - well generally if we have a family meal it is vegetarian. I (apparently) make such tasty meals that DP (says he) doesn't miss the meat at all. However, if meat is wanted by DP or the children he will often do some on the bbq so that it isn't in the house. Otherwise they order meat dishes when we go out for meals. The children also eat meat at childcare and DD1 gets turkey in her wraps for school that I will make for her.
I guess in that respect I think everyone in the house who does eat meat gets enough meat in their diets. They also eat a lot more vegies, tofu and pulses than most other kids which is a good thing. They love stir frys, pasta, risotto, burritos, pizzas, soups, frittatas etc all made meat-free so it isn't too hard to cook a family meal and keep everyone happy.
I have been vego for 18years.... my partner now is and my three children. I just wanted to share an awesome website that i use, veggie num num, really yummy recipes, and even my meat loving friends use and love this site!
We have a vegetarian household but DH and I were vegie before DS came along so in that respect it is easier. My advice would be to cut things down gradually. So start making vegetarian meals and experimenting with non-meat alternatives but don't go cold turkey (no pun intended!). After a while you will have built up a bank of vege recipes that you know family members will like and the transition will be easier. The hardest days for us are ones like Xmas but we now make an awesome nut roast and even though our extended family eat meat they will also eat the nut roast - because it tastes good!
