I don't pre-soak the peas (and by the looks of Suze & Kimbaz's recipies they don't either). I just chuck an onion, carrot, bag of yellow split peas & bacon hock in a pot and cook till the peas are mushy. Easy & yum!
I have soaked the soup mix overnight, and I am precooking them for 1hr atm. Also my MIL says she cooks the hock in a pressure cooker for 30min and then uses that liquid as the stock. So I am doing that aswell. The hock will get cut up and put in the crockpot with the rest of the ingredients.
Thanks again. I will let you all know how it turns out. And yes I will be buying some yummy fresh bread to have with it
500 grams diced bacon
2 litres chicken stock
Yellow split peas ( I like it thick so I put heaps in)
2 onions
white pepper to taste
In a big saucepan I brown off the bacon and onion. Then cover with stock. Add split peas and more stock/water if needed. Cook on a low simmer for a couple of hours.
I went out for a bit today and when I came back I could smell the soup at the front door. Opened the door and was hit by the best smell LOL. YUMMY! I can't wait to eat it
