    Play dough

Not sure I this is recipes or hobbies....

I was thinking of making some play dough for dd. She is 17 months. Is she too young for it? She is very switched on for her age, she doesn't just eat random things (ie from the floor etc). She's very creative, I just don't know if it's going to be a waste of time for her age yet. Can they work out the joys of play dough do you think?

Also can someone give me a good recipe? I don't know what to pick from google....

The bestest recipe is the one on the Cream of Tartar box. It's never failed me. I had an epic play dough fail and the BB community pointed me in that direction and I'm now a champion Play dough maker! ( I halve the recipe)
    It lasts for absolutely ages.
I'm sure she'll love it. And what does it matter if she eats a bit! At least you know what's in it.

Pm'd you the recipe. I'm too lazy to rewrite it!

Cream of Tartar one always worked for me too, I now use the TMX variation of it as it makes it super smooth. 17 months is old enough IMO. DS played with it since 12 months he used to try eat it but they soon work out dont like salt taste and there is nothing dangerous in it. I am not a fan myself of recipes that put scents in them for young ones as seems mean to make it smell like food but it not be nice to eat.

No such thing as too young for play dough! LOL Actually, that's not true at all. You just need to think about a couple of things. Little kids will want to explore it like food, which is a choking hazard, plus the saltiness isn't good for their little kidneys. So if you decide to introduce it, you need to stay with her & watch the whole time. And only use very soft dough. As kids get a bit older, they tend to lose that urge to put their mouth on everything plus they are more likely to understand your instructions not to eat it. Plus it takes them a while to work out what to do with it, so she not be very interested in it to start with. At this age she might get more enjoyment out of messy play using something like coloured gloop that you can cook up with cornflour.

Don't expect her to make any grand creations :P, but I don't think she's too little. DD2 loves it.
I give her different stuff to poke into it and roll in it. She has the other kids to learn from though.

Yep she'll love poking her fingers into it and making squishy patterns. If you have any cookie cutters she'll probably like squishing them in it also. Cream of Tartar box recipe is the way to go.

    Thanks ladies!

Recipe was a success, worked perfectly and I did the half amount like you said Lenny.

She was a bit wary at first (she doesn't like having sticky stuff on her hands) until she realized it won't stick to her too much, but then she got into cutting out shapes, rolling, pressing etc.

All in all we have a winner!!

Play dough is awesome for that age....and it grows with them as you can change what you put with it for them to play with as they grow. This age is good for cutters, rolling pins, paddle pop sticks, plastic spoons etc. as they get older you can try matchsticks, gum nuts, plastic figurines to make 'footprints', candles and patty paper 'cupcakes', glitter and scented playdough.

I must've tried a dozen different recipes before I found the Cream of tartar one....foolproof! The tmx recipe makes awesome playdough too - a friend used to make it for me

    Playdough rocks!
