I do the same as mildez its the tastiest way Ive tried although I only put bacon and onion in the middlet hen layre potatoes on top and only put cheese on the top

for a lower fat version I mix a packet french onion soup with 1 1/2 cups milk and a tsp mustard and pour over sliced potatoes then sprinkle a small amount of reduced fat cheese on the top
