    Salt in tinned tomatos

I can't believe the discrepancy in the sodium content between different brands of tinned tomatos. Talking diced tomatos, the Coles Australian Tomatos have 6mg / 100g of sodium. Coles Italian Tomatos, and all the other brands I checked have a min of 300mg /100 g. This is absolutely amazing. I can tell you which ones I've been buying! I mightn't mind so much if it was just for me, but think of Jack's kidneys and how much extra salt he'd be getting if I didn't read the labels!

i know what you mean! i have the same issue with salt AND sugar.. so i buy Ardmona whole peeled tomatoes and either chop them up myself or zap them in the blender!! they have "no added salt" and "no added sugar" salt is 6mg/100...
It's because they use salt AND/OR sugar as preservatives in the chopped or crushed tomatoes!

it always pays to read the labels!!

Same goes for sundried tomatoes. Check out the labels for these - the salt content can be huge. We used to buy a brand - sorry, I forget which one - which was much lower than the others - but then Coles stopped stocking it.

Haroula - I am going to look out for those Ardmona ones next time - thanks!

Yep, pays to read the labels.

There's a difference between crushed and diced too - one has more sugar & salt than the other. I stand at the tinned tomato section reading labels every time 'cause I can't remember which one is lower in salt & sugar.

Another good reason to avoid the Coles brand - its my pet peeve as I'm afraid Coles & Woolies are getting rid of other brands in favor of their own.

Good idea about buying the whole tomatoes - might be cheaper too!

You are very right in saying that they are getting rid of the other brands!

Try buying sliced tasty cheese in Coles that isn't homebrand or Coon!! at least Woolies still stocks other brands!!
