    Question Stewing Apples?????

Hi I'm wanting to stew apples I've got around 4-5kg in the fridge going to waste and I've never stewed fruit before. Just wondering if anyones got a good fruit stewing recipie that they could share!

I just peel them finely with a knife (manage to take off less than a peeler), put them in a bit of water and simmer, making sure they don't boil dry (I've nearly done that several times ). If you want them really soft as apple sauce, let them cook a bit longer and mash or puree them, or leave lumpy.

When I was making apple sauce for Steph, I used to freeze it in ice cube trays. I guess if you planned on making pies down the road, you could freeze (drain first) the pieces on lined trays (so it wouldn't freeze in one enormous lump), then once frozen, put into a labeled bag. Although, having said that, I think you just slice the apple finely and put into the pie crust raw?

I don't add sugar or anything like that, but that's only 'cos I'd be making them for Steph. And generally it would be sweet enough anyway.

You could add a couple of whole cloves or cinnamon stick if you wish.

Hope that is of some help to you. Good luck.

Thankyou netix, I'll give it a try, plan on freezing it an the ice cube trays sound good! I just don't want to waste them and they're already getting to the point were they should be eaten! I'm so sick of throwing away fruit and vegies because we aren't eating them!

I'm a big fan of stewed apples as I don't like many fruits but cooked apples is one. I use them in baking apple muffins (using both stewed and fresh) but also just use them for a snack. They freeze well too.

    Yummmmmmy.

    Snoopea,
Another way to keep the apple is to stew it and then place it in jars. The sort that has bit that pops in the middle when you open them. Clean the bottles and lids, I then pour boiling water over them and allow to completly dry. Place the jars on a cloth, fill with the hot apple, to nearly the top and put the lid on. The middle bit will pull in as the apple cools and seals it. It can then be stored in the pantry. I have done this myself and only had a few go off. Oh, another important thing to remember, don't use jars that have had anything strong smelling in them, makes for interesting apple sauce!!!
