    Use-by date for meat

Bought some mince the other day and meant to put in the freezer but I haven't done it yet

The use-by date is today, will it be ok to freeze it now or should I chuck it out?

I think it should be alright. My mum has done it a few times and we were fine but maybe see what other people suggest. Im always a bit funny when it comes to meat as you just dont know.

I wouldn't freeze it, I would use it today or tomorrow, it's much safer because once you defrost it there may be issues.

we freeze on use by date, but mark it to be cooked straight from the freezer (so nto defrosted overnight - out of the freezer, defrost in micro and cook)

or, cook spag bol or something and freeze it - once it's cooked it's fine

i've read in other places of people cooking mince in bulk and freezing in small amounts to add sauce later as well...

Dont know how safe it is but I have bought meat on special because it is close to use by date and just frozen it and cooked it after defrosting and so far we have been okay. (wheres the icon for touching wood)!!!!

I had a batch go dodgy in the freezer that I froze on the use by date, so just be careful. I think it is better to cook it now if in doubt.

Thanks! Think I will have to muster up the energy to cook it up into spag bog tonight to put in the freezer. Thought about giving it to the dog but I'd prefer not to give him the expensive mince!
I've already got some chicken that needs to be eaten tonight (silly me only read the packaging today and it says not suitable for freezing). Lol had a real doozy with the shopping this week!

1stTimeMumma- you are not alone! I'm real picky with my food, I probably throw out things sometimes when it's not necessary, but I guess I'd rather that than have food poisoning.
