    Question What is molasses?

Is it the same as golden syrup?

There's a SC recipe I want to try for home-made Baked Beans.

    This is the ingredient list:

1 1/4 cup Dry White Navy Beans
    3 cups Water
    1 x Onion, finely Chopped
    1/2 teaspoons Salt
    1/2 tsp pepper
    1 tbsp Brown Sugar
    1/2 tsp Dijon Mustard
    2 teaspoons Vinegar
    1/4 cup Molasses
    1/2 cup Ketchup
    1 tsp Fresh Chili Paste
    2 Tbsps maple Syrup
    5 x Bacon Slices

D'ya think I could use Golden Syrup instead of Molasses and tomato sauce instead of ketchup?

It's a by-product of sugar manufacturing. I used to feed it to my horse and from memory it's alot blacker and stronger than golden syrup and a little bitter. i think you probably could substitute Golden Syrup (or maybe pop down to the closest stables and filch a few spoonfuls lol)
AFAIK tomatoe sauce and ketchup are the same thing.

Molasses has a very rich and bitter flavour. It's really dark looking. I would say a lot more bitter and stronger flavour than golden syrup. I don't know if golden syrup would work???? Give it ago! probably make it very sweet.

Thanks - the only time I've come into contact with molasses was feeding the horses! But they're in Qld and I'm not

I make home made baked beans with molasses, i got it in Coles i think or maybe the local Deli, it IS out there! Treacle would be an ok substitute, but i dont think golden syrup would quite cut it!

Yeah. But with international recipes, sometimes the ingredients have weird names and we know them by other things ... like cornstarch (cornflour).

My local Woolies / Safeway doesn't have it, I'll have to go off the mountain to find it methinks

Kazbah - Go to your local pet produce and they wil have it there, just ask for a cup of it or something. If i was in melbourne i would give you some of mine i feed to the horses hahaha. I personally don't think it is anything like Golden Syrup but as yael said it does taste a little bit like licorice. Good luck
