Today I saw full priced bananas under the $10 mark for the first time since cyclone Yasi. Which got me wondering.... who has been eating the bananas. Obviously for the price to stay up so long the demand is there even at over $10 a kg. We have been eating them but not with the same reckless abandon as we did before Yasi. DH buys them marked down from the shop next to his gym - they are marked down because they are ripe so they are just right to eat immediately. We haven't cooked with banana for a long time because we never have any old ones hanging around.
I prefer the ladyfingers so it was nice when they were the same price as the Cavendish because I didn't have to justify the extra expense.

I was just thinking this the other day! Ours are down to $7.99, coming from Carnarvon. I would never buy them at that price, I don't understand how they can sustain it!
I was a bit excited to see them come down in the local coles this week. We have Harris Farm here that does them cheaper but they are a bit bruised and definitely ripe.
I never really stopped buying them. They are DS's favourite and I do limit him to 1 a day (he would eat 3 or more a day if I let him) I figured we spend $2 on a bag of chips and more on chocolates why not pay that for something that is actually healthy and soemthing he prefers.
Nope, we have most definitely not been eating them as they ahve been well over the $10 - mostly $15-$16kg. They spent a few weeks at $10, but last week they suddenly plummeted to $6. Needless to say I bought a heap and we had a big banana feast.
I haven't really stopped, but am picky with the ones I'll buy - I don't like green bananas. Glad they're finally starting to come down though - cravings are harsh at $5 a pop
Don't shoot me, but I've been buying bananas as per usual. Their price hasn't really bothered/affected me, but I guess its good that they are coming down, more $ for chocolate
I don't mind, as long as they are eaten, and they sure do get eaten! My two monkeys go wild for bananas, and I haven't really been a fan of bananas but I have to say I am slowly converting.
I have been buying them here consistently since cyclone Yasi, even at up to $20 kilo. Regular price that I was paying for months was around $15 kilo.
DS is an extremely fussy eater and banana's are the only fruit he will eat and even then sometimes it can be a struggle. Since he needs to take a piece of fruit to pre-primary and that is all he will eat then we don't really have a choice. And for those who might say, well at that price my son would not be eating them and would be forced to eat another fruit, unfortunately it doesn't always work that way.
We are lucky that we could afford them and I would simply allow $20 per week in my budget for banana's. It's just the way it is in our household.
I ahve wondered the same thing...who buys $18 bananas??!! But every week, they disappear and new ones are put out...LOL, now I know! But I can't justify spending so much on one item in my grocery shop even though the kids and I love bananas and they never stick around long in our fruit basket.
Lately, I just buy two when we go shopping. One each for DD and DS1. They love bananas adn they have become a shopping treat for them! Better than the usual lolly pop or chocolate they would normally get.
Though yesterday I saw them for $6.50 which is extremely cheap out here. They haven't been theat cheap for months. So we brought 4, lol, what a splurge!
We have been buying but where we would normally get maybe 6-8 for a week, we have only been getting 3-4 and making it a treat. The kids love them and JJ would eat 3 in one sitting if he could. I used to mush one up every morning in their porridge which I haven't done since Yasi, and now they are just a snack. Looking forward to them coming down a bit more so we can go back to normal buying!
We have been eating them still, although not as much as we had in the past.... I ended up buying more apples, mandarins etc... but now that the weather is warmer I have been buying watermelon, pineapple, mangoes etc...
I still buy a couple every now and then for myself and the kids, but price isn't a factor in that. I'm really fussy with my bananas and they have to be just right for me to eat them. I won't buy them after they've gone pas the stage of right for me
I never stopped buying them either, just cut down on the amount we would buy. Miss E - I don't think you need to say "don't shoot me" - what you do with your money is your own business.
Likewise to the people who are saying "Who is paying $18 a kilo for bananas???"
If you have fussy eaters who you know will eat bananas, you will buy them. I looked at some of the junk that was in my trolley and took that out and put bananas in, felt better that way.
Bought a hand at Woolies last night and they were down to $7.99 a kilo, yay.
Do you know what shocked me the other day? GRAPES. I chose a massive bunch of grapes (mum's group was coming round) without looking at the price and it came through the register at $27 I almost died. Turned out it was like a kilo and a half at $17 a kilo. Needless to say they went back.
I have - never stopped. If we stop buying them altogether because of the price (I understand fully that many have tight budgets and may have had to reduce or completely stop buying them except for the occasional treat), it just opens the door for them to be imported and that would be not only ridiculous but also crippling for our local farmers to have to compete with imported bananas
