I was flicking through cookbooks this afternoon looking for some inspiration and I picked up one of my mother's old books. Her bestie gave it to her for Christmas '56.
The title is Continental Cookery in Australia. This is form the introduction to the "Brains" chapter.

In France and most European countries brains are not exclusively the toddler's diet - they are greatly favoured generally..... Brains are becoming fashionable in America too - to eat. I noticed them packed hygienically in cellophane bags, already cleaned, on those glassed-in counters of those huge self-service stores which are the housewife's boon over there. The following few recipes show you how brains can be served with a difference - and for adults too!

It's funny how times change - I'm pretty sure that toddler food isn't what springs to mind when one sees brains at the butcher these days.....

I remeber when my youngest brother was a baby (10 years difference between us) He was born in Australia where as my other brother and I were born in Scotland, and mum and dad would look and cringe at the baby food tins of brains!!! And be even more disgusted when people suggested they buy them from butchers and cook up for there baby!!!!

(My parents love liver and kidney and off course Haggis but this they found disgussting)

I will admit that I'm partial to brains. The fresher the better

Maybe it's because my mother used to cook them for me....

I remember seeing these in the baby food section... I'm pretty sure I'd have been given them, too.

Mum used to make crumbed brains for me as a child...... I am now vegetarian...

But I don't think DH would see the funny side of feeding DS (or him!!) brains ...

Maybe if I made some nice white sauce ...

Or maybe if I didn't tell him that's what I was lovingly panfrying ...

In DH's MCHN book from the 70's there is brains in there. And other weird things like orange juice concentrate... what the?

I used to be fed brains, as well as liver and other things like that. *GAG* The thought of it now...ick!! No offence meant to those that enjoy it, and I have no idea why eating a steak is more enticing than eating a kidney, I mean it's all from the same animal right? Just my head telling me it's not nice!

When DS1 was a baby..only 8yrs ago, I made up a brains recipe from Robin Barkers Toddler Meals, he loved them! I asked the butcher for them, and he immeadiatley said are they for your baby I also have him kidneys or was it liver? It was again a Robin Barker recipe made with apples this time. I still have the book.
I don't personally like brains, probably would eat them if I wasn't aware. Masterchef had them a couple of times the series just gone.
My Sister and Mother love crumbed brains.
My Dad's favourite was lambs fry for breakfast and he loved devilled kidneys!

I like lamb's fry. I haven't had it for ages. Probably because I buy my meat these days instead of slaughtering it. I wonder how my neigbours here in the suburbs would cope if we did a bit of back-yard butchery? Not well probably. Someone called the police when my friend's Dad decided to DIY slaughter in the BBQ belt.
Funny how people are, meat is ok as long as it is in a nice package and you don't have to get too close to its origins...

DP was just looking up brawn recipes the other night! When we do our first kill, we want to use as much as we can. Don't think we'll be using bovine brains...we'll wait till we've got the sheep and pigs on site

Rouge, do you have a butcher that sells sweetbread? Dad is convinced they keep them for themselves because they're so hard to find.
