Can your school aged child do up their shoelaces?

He could do them properly when he was in year 1 so 6yrs. He tries to skip doing them these days and just slip them on but the mean mummy I am makes him redo the laces and tighten them.

DD is of school age, ie, *could* go to school (but doesn't go yet, she's going next year) and can do her laces, she learnt just after she was 4. I was lucky though, she learnt really quickly, DH and I showed her maybe 5 times or so when we brought he laced shoes and she got it.

We got our second little cardboard shoe today. The first one was ripped up in frustration a year ago.
I mentioned to the woman at the shoe shop that DS2 was trying to do up his laces and she asked if I'd got a card before so I said no because I thought it might be handy and I figured it was easier to lie than to explain that DS1 had ripped the last one up. DS1 then asked the woman what she was getting and she told him so he said "we used to have one of them" then she bought it out and gave it to DS2 who said "that's the same as the one one DS1 had"
I guess it would have been easier to explain that the last one was ripped up after all.

Gotta love how kids keep us honest

My DS is a bit young yet. But I remember learning myself. My aunt taught me. I would have been no more than 7 as that is when we moved away. I remember her saying I was old enough to learn to tie laces & I should stop wearing velcro lol!

Charlie started this year, almost age 6 but his dad kept at him, which is probably why. Before that, lazy and enabler mummy just bought him shoes with zelcro on it.
