I don't have a teenager yet, but it isn't so long since I was one - and I have siblings who are. I am one of 6 kids - 5 of us were girls.

None of us have ever had that "gilmore girls" type relationship with our mother (none of my female friends did either). It wasn't that we were deliberately keeping stuff from them, but rather it was just 'none of her business'. It would have been strange to talk to my mum about certain things. Even now, we talk alot more and get along pretty well, but I wouldn't talk to her if I had problems with my relationship or sex life for example, it's not really her business, and talk about 'awkward'.
