Honestly, no - it wasn't the right thing to do.

The further you distance yourself from him - the better. Involving yourself in his personal life is only going to cause you anguish.

If I was in your situation, the less I knew about what rot he was getting to, the more you can move on with your own life.

Sorry if it seems harsh, but in my experiences, the less you involve yourself in their lives, the better.
