Burnt the wedding dress, burnt the veil, burnt the ceremonial marriage certificate, sold the rings, threw away the trashy jewellery he'd given me while we were together.
When my ex asked for them back, I told him I threw them in the river and to start swimming. Oddly enough though, he proposed to his now wife around that time, so I am guessing he wanted to recycle my engagement ring. Tight wad.
My rings are in a drawer and I'll give them to the girls when they are older. He never gave me jewelery (his mum did, she worked in a shop) so I don't wear any of that... probably go to the girls as well. The dress will be kept for the girls in case they want any of the fabric for their dresses. I'm slowly selling all the furniture we bought together and will be moving into my own house soon.
Slow but steady process to remove him from my life. DS's dad however never gave me anything but DS... I'm keeping him
Even though my dad cheated on my mum and broke her heart, I see her engagement ring and wedding band as a "symbol" of the time they were happiest - they were together for 13 years and there are a lot of wonderful memories of that time that I have and that both my mum and dad have too and regularly talk about... I think it really depends why you broke up and what your time together was like...
I have kept mine - originally I kept them in case DS wanted them for some reason but the older he gets and as his understanding grows of what my time was like with XDH and what his time now is like with his dad, I don't see him wanting anything to do with them.
Their "symbol" is very toxic so I'm considering having them cleaned and polished and then selling them...
I threw my first engagement ring back at my ex. No way I wanted any reminder of him in my life.
Next engagement ring, my fiance sadly passed away. I kept the ring for a long time but got to the point where it felt like a weight around my neck so I returned it to his father to hold until my fiance's daughter is old enough to have it. It was a stunning pink diamond and worth lots of $$ so I've copped a bit of flack for not either selling it or having it re-set but it didn't feel right to keep it - just felt like it was holding me in a perpetual state of mourning. Funnily enough, not long after it was gone my DH came into my life.
