well.. its official..i have whooping cough **cry**
i just came back from the doctors, crying almost all the way home!!
I have whooping cough!! I dont know what to do, i am seriously about to pull my own hair out from the coughing and gagging and spewing.. i am on the edge of a break down. i cant do it anymore.
and what about my poor baby?
this isnt the way its ment to happen, im not ment to get something like this when im pregnant.
im so sorry, i just need to vent.
yiikes. so sorry to hear steve w...
What has the doctor given you to get rid of it?
How severe is whooping cough anyway??
Im pretty sure it wont affect bubz but. The coughing might just make u very sore in the chest and stomach area, but it will prob just be muscular.
Stevie, I am so sorry to hear that it is WC. I am glad, however, that you went and got tested and now know why you haven't been able to shake the cough.
Were they able to give you anything to give you some relief?
he has given me a script for "EES 400 filmtabs 400mg base" but has told me to call him later today after he talks to the midwives at the hospital. Since ive had it for 3 weeks already he's not sure its worth giving it to me or not. he just said he wants to be on the safe side.
oh i was such a mess at the doctors, i seriously just dont know what to do,
any of you ladies had it before or know someone who has?
how long does it last? once ur on meds does it not get any worse, only better? if better at all!!
I am just so scared i will have this forever ( i know thats not rash, but im pg gimme a break )
its so very depressing!!
tk1999, your right tho, i am very glad that i now know. my doctor told me he's very glad i decided to do the tests anyway even tho that other douche of a doctor told me now to (obviously he didnt call him a douche )
oh, poor thing!
I am sorry but you are still early in the pg and it should be over before you have the baby. This doesn't help with the pain and frustration of the WC. did the doc prescribed anything to get over it? I had to take some antibiotics for an infection during pg and it was ok.
Hope you will feel better soon!
I'm sorry that you have this - but at least your baby is safer inside you when you have than if bubs was on the outside and caught it off you.
Do you have a good doctor in Nambour? Mine is absolutely awesome so I would be more than happy to recommend you to her if you wanted a second opinion. There is a medical centre in Nambour that is NOT full of good doctors, so I just wanted to make sure you are getting the best possible care.
Take it easy.
And come over for a coffee once you have recovered xxxx
Big big Stevie, you poor love! I got whooping cough at 28 wks and am just getting over it now ( 7 weeks ) . The cough is still there but not as severe. Cold air, spicy, tangy food, soft drinks, apple juice, orange juice etc seems to aggravate it.
Start taking the EES even if they say not too - most dr's have never seen whooping cough in their practice and really don't know what to do about it. It won't help your symptoms, but will protect your family. Trust me, you don't want your partner to get it too! May be a good idea for him ( and other family members) to get a Boostrix shot (pertussis vaccine).
I ended up breaking cartilages in my ribs from all the excessive coughing. They say cough suppressants don't help- that's not true. It won't take the cough away (sorry), but it does make the coughing spells fewer so you can get some rest. You just have to bear with it for a few more weeks. It will come and go. Like you, I thought I will have it forever Lost my voice (still talk like the Godfather !), but it does go. You should be getting over the worst in the next couple of weeks. hang in there hun
Try to get a script for Panadeine Forte from your doctor. It is for strong pain relief, but the codiene is a strong cough suppressant and I found that was the only thing that got me through. If you can't, get some Panadeiene 15 from the pharmacy and take 2 4 times a day. It is safe to take in pregnancy. Also, if like me, you have a lot of chest congestion (this is what makes you cough so hard), get Durotuss Expectorant (in green bottle) and take this 4 times a day. It will seem to be doing nothing, but it is working. Trust me. It is safe to take in pregnancy.
Bub will be fine, so don't worry. It is only a prob for bub if born while you have the active infection. After 3 weeks of coughing, you are not really a danger any more. The only thing that may affect bub is if you are not eating/drinking. I could not even have water, so had to be on a drip. I found thicker food like custard went down better and I didn't vomit it out (sorry if TMI ) while coughing. I guess with my bigger belly, things got harder. Try to eat before 6pm at night - it helped me get a better night's sleep.
Drink heaps of water (or what you can) and get lots of rest. Hope you feel better soon
Just adding to what the other posters have said - it is not likely you will have it forever but a few people I know who have had WC notice that if they get into a coughing fit now (in some cases 15+ years since they had WC) the whoop sound can come back.
A lot of the ladies have already given the advice I was going to post... good luck and take care
ust got a call from the doc he said to def make sure i take those meds. he also said to take "bisolven" if i want to,
anyone else taken this before?
also i have been staying away from all dairy products (milk, chocolate) because i heard this makes u more flemy.. is this true? am i torturing myself for no reason? haha
thanks for the all the well wishes guys.
with me its more of a mind thing. i only get upset when i think of how much longer im going to be unwell.. and if this is going to harm my baby in any way
and also with this sickness .. have i caused anyone else to be unwell? i wouldnt wish this upon anyone
The filmtabs are the right stuff - but what it took me a couple of calls to find out is that they will make you feel even worse for a few days.
The cough can linger for a long while but after 5 days on the tabs you will no longer be contagious.
Let anyone you have been in contact with since you first started showing flu symptoms know, especially if they have contact with very young children.
Finally yes, dairy products can make you a bit more phlegmy. Try instead some honey in hot water with a bit of cinnamon. But dont torture yourself - the cough will do that enough!
just a quick question, when do i take the ees 400? it says one pill 4 times a day with food
so what like every 4 hours?
can taking them too close togther cause any problems?
Oh Stevie! I'm so sorry you've got WC! I'm starting to think that's what I got, but it's come with all the cold/flu like things before it. Sending MAJOR hugs hun
I just wanted to let you know you're not alone hun. I was diagnosed as having WC last night by my GP and have to have the mouth swab today just to confirm it. My GP isn't giving me anything for it as not only do I have it, but my 3 children have it too My older 2 kids have been off school all week.
I can't remember the last time I had dairy products and I have found that lemonade and cordial make me really phlegmy too. I have been drinking 4.5lts of water a day just to halt the coughing fits more than anything. I am over vomitting anything I eat! My WC seems worst first thing in the morning and late at night. 2 days ago I thought I was going to stop breathing in the middle of a fit as I couldn't get any breath until my DD banged me hard on my back... it was so scary.
Anyway... I hope you're feeling much better real soon
